But then again, these people are only making a buck because ... PEOPLE ARE BUYING THE JUNK. Want it to stop? Don't buy it. Want to see the tabloid media go under? Stop buying it. Want to see the major news programs become something resembling responsible? Stop watching them.
In the end, the person buying the crap is just as much, if not MORE responsible.

SQL Server does use named pipes by default. However, even MS recommends changing over to TCP/IP (or some other method) for heavy usage as named pipes don't scale well (at least for SQL Server).

Thank you!!! I was trying to remember where I read that. The book was "The Mind's I". The ant colony metaphor was, in my opinion, his strongest of the book.

... but I read it a very long time ago.

As I was reading about "the future" of MS .Net, I was struck by how much what they were describing sounded like Open Doc. Open Doc was a technology developed by Apple (and I believe IBM was in there, too). It WAS released. But, users found it a confusing way to work, which ultimately led to it's demise. It was a very cool technology, but now it's a dead one.

Unless perhaps, you do as I just did, and go to this page: http://www.etoys.com/cgi-bin/email_etoys.cgi?state =email and send them a note telling them how much you despise what they're doing. Maybe it's not gonna put a dent in their server, but it will let them know that people (and potential customers) are opposed to their actions, and will not have anything to do with them as long as they persist. This is all about money, so let them know you'll speak with your wallet...

  10. Re:Doomed. on Wired on Amazon.com Boycott · · Score: 1

One thing to keep in mind is that in order for a boycott to be effective, you MUST let them know that you're doing it. If you are supporting this, make sure that you contact Amazon and let them know about it. The public campaign being waged by Stallman is going to help, but every individual makes a difference. Don't rely on his name alone. You can't count on them noticing a drop in sales (they probably won't). But, if enough people contact them TELLING them that they're boycotting and why, they might notice. I regret that I don't have an email address to contribute to help anyone do just that. Any help anyone?
