  1. Re:Stop It on The Upcoming LinuxOne IPO · · Score: 1

The call to stop a company from using a ticker coming from slashdot community is strage at least. Not a day passes without another call to arms over a big bad company trying to prevent a little guy from using some domain name. Well, now somebody is trying to use their favorite name and what do we see? The community arguing just as fiercly to stop them.
Some may argue that the difference is intentions. But none of us can claim to be able to read minds yet.
And finally, any investor who buys a stock based on a what ticker sounds like deserves what he gets.

Having just finished my BSBA and planning to get an MBA once I get enough work experience to get into a good program, I recommend against it. Only small percent of MBA's manage techs. But a LOT of MBAs are providing jobs for sysadmins and other techs. In the company were I work (non-tech), we have a fairly large work force of sysadmins who maintain network of computers used by MBAs - get rid of those MBAs and techs lose their jobs.
Remember: not all MBAs are created equal ;-)

I am running devfs and it seems to be a very well behaving patch. unless you enable devfs - kernel compiles normally. Did Linus disklike it for some reason or was there some other reason for leaving it out of the tree?

  6. SCO did this before on SCO Talks About Linux · · Score: 1

In 97 (I think it was 97) SCO sent a letter to linux users offering them to stop playing w/ their toy OS and get a real thing (SCO). RedHat concerned with "SCO letter not reaching enough people" published the letter on their website. SCO got enough comments from linux users to issue an official apology on the matter. 7. Enders Game vs. The rest of the series on Ender's Shadow · · Score: 1

I think Enders Game stood apart from the end of the series. Card said that he rewrote the book to be an intoduction for Speaker for the Dead, but I think the book stands out becasue Ender is forced to act without truly knowing what he is capable of at that point. The weight of responibility in later books leads to more philosophical discussion.
I really would like to read another book about the events taking place in the battleschool. I just hope Card can write them from a perspective that wouldn't repeat (or even worse invalidate) events taking place in Enders Game.

  8. 2 X 2/3 on Report From the Red Hat Road Show · · Score: 2

Did Bob Young point out during presentation that 2/3 of all machines running redhat are servers and 2/3 of them are workstations? ;-)
I've seen him speak, and he makes a very nice presentation of Linux on a newbie level. I wonder if PMs and analysts were really looking for that though. I would guess that they are much more concerned about whether RH can keep it's market rather then if Linux is an OS or a kernel. According to trditional business theories RH position doesn't seem to be easy to defend since there is virtually no barriers to entry into the industry. On other hand two words "internet Portal" seem to have some magical powers to void all the existing business theories ;-)

  9. An argument in defense of Intel on Intel to Cut Pentium III Prices · · Score: 1

It seems that people are assuming that Intel cutting prices unethical, wrong and should be illegal. First of all, these price cuts are hardly predatory, correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me that Intel is still making healthy margins on CPUs.
The argument given most often is that Intel is trying to drive AMD out of the market. Well, if AMD can't compete with Intel maybe it should be driven out of the market. I for one do no tremble in fear of Intel monopoly. If Intel drives AMD out of the market and raises prices to unaffordable levels it would hardly be able to keep competition from entering the market. And a new competitor doesn't have to be a startup w/ no money. It can be one of well established companies, lets pick a hypothetical name: Motorola. The only significant barrier to entry into CPU industry is initial capital commitment - which a lot of companies can pull off.
Finally, I would not be terribly upset if CPU prices go up and new models aren't introduced quite as often. Upgrading CPu every year is becoming a norm, if this stops maybe people would actually pay some attention to increasing efficiency of their software rather then pumping up the productivity of their CPU.

In the movie Sneakers, iirc, they had a contract with a target previous to breaking in. That single difference can be enough to separate crime from security audit.
If we were to allow "I did to test security" argument to have legal or moral force - it can be used to justify virtually anything. Unfortuinately we do not know what ones intentions were when performing the action. And as a result we must judge by the deed rather then intentions.

An effect a bit more drastic then grafitti.

  12. Glorification of crackers? on I Was a Teenage Hacker · · Score: 2

I completely agree with this article. Portraing crackers as "cool" is hardly justifiable. I think the reason why its happening is because majority of people do not use internet for essential day to day activities. When people can't buy groceries because somebody chose to put "3l33t 5cr|pt" on the page - their attitude towards crackers would change very quickly.
Another argument I have a problem with is stating that crackers are good ebcause they show flaws in existing systems. Yet, I haevn't met anyone who would say that car thieves are doing a service to society because they show how inadequate car alarm are. Or murderers being praised because they show flaws in law enforcement system (yes, a crime very different in magnitude, but this is the same argument). Again, in my opinion internet is viewed differently from real world because people do not rely on it for living (well, the majority of people doesn't).
