I was lead tech, moved into management for 7 yrs or so and am back to pure tech. The managment role got to be very dull and not challanging (in the way I like to be challanged). I choose to go back to a tech-only roll and thank my stars daily that I did.
I was a very good tech and a average manager - but the managment stuff will get you down, exp if you have a low tolerance for politics.
I use Linux + squid +ip masq (blocking port 80). Squid logs EVERYTHING by default.
My kids invite friends over, they use either the win machine or one of the *nix boxen in the basement. They know that squid is logging, and I reserve the right to look the logs.
Theory: The web is based on standards, anyone with a browser can play.
Fact: Most webmasters would like to have to deal with (1) OS and (1) browser. Most want whiz bang features. Most consumers don't care as long as their computer can run all of the whiz bang plugins. This all works in M$'s favor.
We need to make sure that Linux has enough of a desktop presence so that it is in the webmaster's best interest to make their site Linux/Netscape compatible. We need to give LOTS of feedback to the sites that do not support standards and/or Linux users.
Linux is my desktop of choice, but I don't care to be a 2nd class web citizen.
