Hi, a couple of years ago we had the same problem till I discovered that all our mailboxes where in one mail spool directory. This was a huge bottleneck and after adapting qpopper and configuring sendmail to a split mailspool dir load came down to 1. (split mailspool is/mail/a/mail/b/mail/c and all users which will begin with an a will be placed in/mail/a... etc... )
