  1. DC can have my info if they want! on Digital Convergence In Violation Of Postal Regs? · · Score: 2

    Things I've scanned:

    1. various bottles and cans of beer I've had lying around the computer room;

    2. a box of about 1000 feet of Cat 5, some used;

    3. a box of Hammermill paper, for inkjet printers;

    4. various sodapop products (Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, RC Edge);

    5. a Motor Trend magazine from 1998;

    6. the barcode from the back of an X10 device (went to www.radioshack.com);

    7. various UPS and FedEx shipping labels I still have lying around;

    8. various barcodes I made with my labelmaker -- mostly words and sentences;

    9. one of those barcode stickers the airlines use to more easily lose your luggage.

    So, in reality, I won't use it for much else. If they want to sell my name and give me special deals for beer, soda, or inkjet paper, I'm all for it!

    I had an idea this was going to happen when I first got this doodad, so I scanned accordingly. And like all things, I got bored quickly with it. Now it provides a nice nightlight for the otherwise dark computer room.

    Now, though, I'll probably De:Claw it so I can have fun mucking up their records!

    I definitely would not shop from a website if PRICE+SHIPPING > PRICE+LOCAL_TAX. I go for the "overall spending of less money" than not paying tax.

    What the stores need to do is compete price-wise with the Internet stores (Reel.Com, DVDwave.com, CDnow.com, take your pick). If I can pick up a movie for $12.99 with even $1 shippping from Reel.com, why on EARTH would I go to Wal-Mart, BestBuy, CircuitShitty, etc and buy it for $20 plus tax?

    But instead, the American Way is Whine, Bitch and Complain and keep funding your cause until You get your way.

    Thinking of all the of-working-age, able-bodied, non-farming individuals in the United States, I have to agree that the number is near the 33 to 35 hour range.

    Sure, you have the break-neck houred people who work 168 hours a week, but you also have the part-timers, moms (or dads) that take a job while the kids are at school for a couple hours a day, a couple days a week - for maybe 10 hours a week for "spending money."

    There are the salaried people who don't care if their job isn't done at the end of 8 hours. They'll start it tomorrow when they get it promptly at 9. If they get in before 9, they'll leave before 5. (Assuming 8h/5d week. There are some who do 10h/4d weeks as well.)

    And I can only believe I left out a great deal of people who work less than 40 hours a week to fulfill their job.

    I work only 40 hours a week. Everyone here works 40 hours a week. The whole company works 40 hours a week (rotating shifts where necessary). Then again, the company for which I work has been around since the late 1800's and is not a technical company.

    Ameritech has no unlimited local calling, and the Chicago area has poor DSL and ISDN access.

    For as long as I remember (like 10 years) Ameritech (Illinois Bell) has always had untimed calls for calls less than 8 miles from your C.O.

    I'm *always* connected via 56K modem. Each call is no more than 5 cents for connection costs, then untimed.

    As for ISDN and ADSL, take another look at Chicago and its suburbs -- $49.95 for ADSL is the going rate (must be less than 18K feet from the CO though).

    Local regulations require that Ethernet cable be strung through metal conduit, which is very labor intensive (read: expensive) and not neccesary.

    Not *always* true. I just had a house built and nothing except electric was in conduit... not phone, not coax, nothing except hot wires. It might be a Chicago city code though -- I moved to the suburbs.

    The good thing about Chicago city code now is that all new construction MUST have a dedicated parking location for at least one car/one bedroom or two car/two bedroom (I think)... so parking your ride is no longer a problem if you live in the City.

    Sorry... nothing real to add here, except maybe to clear up some misinformation you had.

    I see that happening, but I also see my worst fear happening: sitting on the beach on a Sunday morning on Oahu, then getting paged in my eyeball by my job telling me that I have to work on my vacation.

    The flip side is, however, more attractive...

    I'm sitting on the beach on a Sunday morning on Oahu, I get paged in my eye telling me to fix something at my job on the mainland and I never once ever see the office. The beach is my office, and I'm never cooped up in a cube ever again.

    You're definitely not alone!

    There are probably many reasons that people want this...

    1) They *NEED* to feel important. If they miss a second, it will thoroughly impact the rest of their life. I say screw that. If it is that important, leave me a voice mail and I'll eventually get to it.

    2) They *WANT* to be on the hemorraging edge of technology. Who cares if it is functional, attractive or what-not. Again, this will lend the need to being noticed and feeling important. Why do people *need* cell phones and land-line phones? At first, it's "the bigger the better." Remember bag phones? It was to get noticed. Now cell phones are sold on every street corner, people don't need to be seen that much, so they're smaller. Mine is 6 ounces and fits in a shirt pocket.
