  1. Re:Austrailian High Tech Paradox on Australian Censorship-client side filters · · Score: 2

The entire censorship issue can be traced back to be a political maneuver on behalf of our liberal government in order to drum up enough support for their GST to get it passed. It's a load of fucking shit, excuse my french. If it were our governments GENUINE wish to protect the children, then good on them - but when all it is is a campaign to appeal to a couple of key senators who at the time held the balance of power, it makes me fucking sick to live in this country. The *only* thing I can see as being a possible upside is that now the senator in question is just another backbencher with as much say as anyone else, the law will just be "forgotten"... Or atleast not enforced. We wait and see.

Oh, we are :) Working at an ISP is going to help, we're just going to rip every single URL out of the proxy cache, and submit it for checking. Every single image, every snippet of text, every frame, banner, icon, EVERYTHING. Ought to keep them busy for a few days :)

If they're going to make it multiplayer over the net, ideally i'd like to see freely distributable linux based server code... Run a civ3 server anywhere in the world! the problem with games such as ultima online is that whilst its a shitload of fun, playing them in australia is a truly expsnive proposition. most home users are on traffic limited accounts, but traffic to peering points is FREE. simply run a server on an ISP local to you, and most of the state you live in is sorted. and playing against local people is always more exciting than against people all over the world... creates more of a family feel to things i find :)

I know this may only apply to Australia, I'm not sure if other countries generally get charged per mb for bandwidth, but i still think it's a good idea.

  5. DVD copy protection on Diamond will provide anti-piracy software for Rio · · Score: 1
At least one drive that I've seen will only let you change your region six times, and then it gets locked in the last region you set.

OK, so I can't read bootleg DVDs from Europe. I also can't watch legit DVDs.

From what I hear, talking to a salesman of consumer VCR style DVD units, the only ones that are selling are the ones that ignore the localization protection scheme. All those that support it, noone will buy. So guess which one the manufacturers that tried to follow the guidelines are now starting to produce :)
