  1. On a similar vein... on WebTV/MSNTV Virus Dials 911 · · Score: 1

I recall once trying some obscure open-source dial-up package (can't remember the name I'm afraid) which for some reason had the (unconfigured) default phone number as 99999...

Now, 999 is the UK equivalent of 911.

Just typing the command caused it to dial...

  2. Why bother with a courtcase? on "Deep Linking" Controversy Renewed in Texas · · Score: 1

It's easy to block unauthorised links from offsite by checking the HTTP 'referer' header. Then if the user came from offsite, just redirect them to your homepage.

Are these guys dumb or what?

  3. Reclining chair on Finding the Programming Zone? · · Score: 1

    1. Really comfortable reclining chair.
    2. Silent, large-screen laptop.
    3. The right music: light jazz, gregorian chant, etc.
    4. Mood lighting.
    5. No distractions.

  4. This would probably be unconstitutional on Senate Bill Would Make Clandestine Video Taping Illegal · · Score: 1
IANAL but if I remember correctly, in the CDA challenge the supreme court ruled that requiring speakers to 'perjoratively label' their own speech was unconstitutional.

A '.porn' label is probably perjorative ipso facto, and certainly so in any cases where the act's definition is any wider than strictly conventional (ie commercial) pornography.

  5. What would a trading standards officer say? on Approaching Lost Clients About Security? · · Score: 1

I don't know what legal duristiction you are in, but here in the UK I would consider reporting them to the office of fair trading.

  6. Re:All DVD players are illegal on EFF Appeals 2600 Decision · · Score: 1

Not really, the key verb 'to circumvent' means:

1.To surround (an enemy, for example); enclose or entrap.
2.To go around; bypass: circumvented the city.
3.To avoid or get around by artful maneuvering: She planned a way to circumvent all the bureaucratic red tape.

I don't think players designed according to the legitimate criteria of the copy control system can be described as 'circumvention devices'.

  7. Starship Troopers and Facism on Stranger In a Strange Land · · Score: 1

I would describe the regime in Starship Troopers as a martial one. I don't think facism applies since that is generally considered the result of an alliance between corrupt, failed socialist regimes forming an alliance with corporate powers in order to manipulate and control a gullble and traumatized public, usually appealing to populist and nationalist senitiments.

I think it's a mistake to consider Heinlein's portral as serious. It's an unusually optimistic, lighthearted thought experiment in what a martial regime might be like _if_ accompanied by a strong ethic of personal responsibility. Of course that's a pretty big 'if'.

  8. What about PNG on EU Board Votes To Allow Software Patents · · Score: 1

That's odd, my copy of IE and NS4 both display .PNG graphics just fine.

  9. Why not include COM as well? on KDE And GNOME To Share Component Architectures? · · Score: 4

So, why not create a three-way bridge which includes the WINE COM subsystem as well?

Just think of all the thousands of COM components out there which would then be available to both GNOME and KDE environments too.

For instance, kfm would then be able to display MS Office documents if you had Office installed using WINE etc...

  10. Re:Do they know you're the author? on What Happens When Open Source And Work Collide? · · Score: 1

This is probably a bad idea, since they aren't likely to be happy once they find out you've misrepresented the situation and they've wasted their time mulling over a hypothetical.

Well, It would piss me off anyway!

  11. Have you discussed it with them? on What Happens When Open Source And Work Collide? · · Score: 1

My suggestion would be to discuss your concerns with your boss _before_ doing any work. Ask them to sign a declaration stating that:
    (a) They consider the copyright to the program to be yours and yours alone, and
    (b) That they waive all future copyright claims to the program, including work you do at their request.

  13. Go PC World! on Flaws in LCD Displays? · · Score: 1

I bought an Advent laptop from PC World last month and found it had a single always-on pixel.

They didn't bat an eyelid when I took it back the next day and replaced it without charge.

You can't say fairer than that, can you?

    (PS. I don't work for them :)

  14. You can't stop evolution, just change the arena. on Genetically Engineered Children · · Score: 1

The evolutionary purpose of procreation is to maximize the survial prospects of one's own genes, not some other set of genes that were cooked up in a lab. The genes of parents who wish to bear engineered children will, by definition be selected out of the gene pool. Thus the propensity to genetically engineer one's children is not a trait likely to pass between generations. Of course, such engineering may appeal to those who regard their own genes as defective in some way, or indeed those who are sterile, but their enhanced progeny will not feel the same way. In short, there's nothing to worry about.
