  1. Don't forget Bonsai Kitten on Top 10 Web Fads · · Score: 5, Funny

I remember Bonsai Kitten. All the ladies in the office were so mad about this back in the day.

  2. I picked this up last week. on Codex · · Score: 2, Interesting

Got this book last weekend at a garage sale for US$.50. Worth every penny, especially considering the ending is a total letdown.

  3. Re:Stabbed with a phaser... on Darth Vader Sculpture on Washington National Cathedral · · Score: 1

    Local variation:

One bright day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys rose to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
And drew their swords and shot each other.
A deaf policeman heard the noise,
And saved the lives of the two dead boys.
If you don't believe this lie is true,
Ask the blind man, he saw it too.

  4. Re:Why are we picking on thr Russians? on Uprated "10-ton" Ariane 5 Fails · · Score: 5, Informative

There's a nice table here (middle of page) showing some raw numbers between 1957 and 1998. Basically, 3022 of 3092 (97%) total launches were successful.

  5. Re:Does it work yet? on Opera 6.0 for Linux Released · · Score: 1

Appears to be better. 6.02 on Windows displays everything I use almost exactly the same as IE or Moz, however I have more javascript errors pop up than ever before. Even Hotmail works fine now. Same with 6.0 on Linux, finally fixed the only problem I had before, which was strange fonts being used for many things.

  6. Re:Light as a feather! on Air-Powered Cars · · Score: 1

I drive a Mazda Miata-it only weighs 2100 lbs. with me in it and a couple of heavy parts taken out.(A/c, etc) Except for when the top is off I have no problems even in the strongest of winds because of the aerodynamics of the vehicle. The Sienna, however, in even gentle winds you can really feel it. With SUV's it's even worse. The point is that it's not about weight, it's about wind.

  7. KISS on Is There A Market For A Voice Controlled MP3 Car Stereo? · · Score: 1

My favorite programming idiom is KISS-Keep it simple, stupid. Why doesn't someone just put a zip drive in a single din holder with a simple display and a perl script running using linux. For example, all the mp3's could be in folders for each band you have on the disc, and the display could have a special "icon" (wrong word, something to indicate it's a folder). Then you just select the folder and then the song.

You don't even have to use zip disks, use anything that works for you. A simple cdrom drive could work for those who can write, Zip 250's could be a bigger option. Even ram sticks would work.

As for the skipping, a lot of read-ahead would allow many seconds of pre-loading into ram, which, of course, won't skip.

The simplicity idea works for the amplification, too. RCA pre-outs are all that is necessary for most car audio applications where there is an aftermarket accessory. Since the car is a poor place for 5.1 sound, stereo works just fine, thank you.

If anyone else has any other ideas, I would love to hear them.

  8. Re:What they don't tell you about GPS... on Engineers Build Satellite Jammer · · Score: 1

Is it just me, or when using a GPS receiver, when you are moving at over 5mph it says that it is indeed accurate? When still, the position varies by a few feet in every direction. This suggests that it can correct the offset at speed. I would guess that this is why the gov't needs to jam it instead of increase the offset. Anyone correct me, please?

  9. Record company profits on German Censorware Targets Music · · Score: 1

Amusing perhaps, when you remember that the record companies (at least here in the states) had record sales and profits for the last year. When they are fighting to "save their industry", they are making more money than ever before. Not to mention all of the beneficial web pages that will be blocked from the innocents.
