As a professional photographer, I find the "semi-professional" title offensive. It's like the kids who have changed a battery in their iphone and now claim to be computer repair specialists.
Honestly. I *hate* how society has come to a point where everyone believes themselves to be super-special.
Oh, aren't you the special one?
Semi-pro is a legit label. And because of the ubiquitous availability of smart cameras, the ranks of the semi-pros has grown to the point where they make the "professional photographer" feel threatened.
Within 20 years, there'll be no such thing as a "professional photographer."
Its a great way to screen candidates. If you program in.NET you're probably less sophisticated and skilled than if you programmed in C or Java on Linux.

They claim that spoiling a ballot is illegal, but the Constitution makes such actions protected speech.
I made it VERY clear I had spoiled my ballot in the last election. I voted for everyone, and then said, VERY loudly, that this election was a waste of time, and that I spoiled my ballot by voting for everyone. They weren't too happy, but what are they going to do, make a federal case out of it? That could start a dangerous trend.
Voting for everyone, and then saying you voted for everyone, is non-partisan (nice loophole against displays of partisanship at the voting center, thank you very much). And it doesn't meet the standard of "disrupting", whereas if the people running the show make an issue of it, they are actually causing the disruption.
Not voting means that no party gets the money his vote would have earned them.
Not voting means that they might realize that there's money being "left on the table" if they're willing to do something to earn the voters trust rather than just show dueling attack ads.
Enough people not voting means that someone is going to see an opportunity among the disaffected. Everyone "voting for the least bad" hides that, and legitimizes the "least bad" as "good enough".
Why can't we have a "none of the above", and if "none of the above" gets the majority in a riding, there's a do-over, with (hopefully) new candidates and new ideas.
I'm curious as to why you believe the Liberals are so bad? Is it just that people bought into the "He didn't come back for you" nonsense character assasination? I honestly don't understand why people think the Conservaties are the "best of the worst" what with their ongoing list of advertising scandals, misspoken MPs, forging documents and lack of openness. Isn't that worse than what caused people to dislike the Liberals 5 years ago? It blows my mind.

The program ran from 1996 until 2004, when broad corruption was discovered in its operations and the program was discontinued. Illicit and even illegal activities within the administration of the program were revealed, involving misuse and misdirection of public funds intended for government advertising in Quebec. Such misdirections included sponsorship money awarded to ad firms in return for little or no work, which firms maintained Liberal organizers or fundraisers on their payrolls or donated back part of the money to the Liberal Party. The resulting investigations and scandal affected the Liberal Party of Canada and the then-government of Prime Minister Paul Martin. It was an ongoing affair for years, but rose to national prominence in early 2004 after the program was examined by Sheila Fraser, the federal auditor general.
It's not that we don't want it... it's just that we spend millions on replacing one turd with another turd, and in the end are no better off, just short a few million. *sigh*
That's because politics is like a septic tank - the really big chunks just naturally float to the top.
What if you don't like any of the candidates, and you don't want any of them to get funding based on the number of votes they got?
The last election, I did something I've never done before - I spoiled my ballot by voting for all of them. I am sick and tired of attack ads, politicians trying to tell me that I should vote for them because the other man/woman eats babies for breakfast, tries for sound bites instead of addressing the issues, and thinks our collective memory span is so short that we must all be suffering from Alzheimers.
Mix web technologies and C/C++ components in a single app
Today, you can use the webOS Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) to build games and immersive apps in C/C++. But the feature that gives the PDK its name—the ability to build C/C++ plug-ins for your HTML/JavaScript/CSS apps—is still in beta as of 1.4.5.
This feature will exit beta in webOS 2.1, opening the door for you to distribute apps that incorporate PDK plug-ins. Using plug-ins, you can more easily port app logic from other platforms while leveraging the Mojo Framework to give users a familiar interface and integrate seamlessly into webOS.
Even if you’re not porting, plug-ins give you the option of utilizing the PDK for graphics- and performance-intensive features as needed, while building the rest of your app in HTML/JavaScript/CSS—and enjoying the lightweight development process and rapid iteration that these web technologies enable.
Plus, by using c/c++, you're not giving users the source to your game or app.
And the linked article which is the source of the rumours makes some really dumb suppositions:
Drieu left Apple in March 2010, where he was the head of the company's rich media and applications group. After a five month period without employment, he joined Motorola. His work with Web standards groups WhatWG and W3C and his Web-related patents suggest that he would be well-suited to lead an operating system development effort.
Yeah,. right, that's the ticket. Get "web standards" people to build an operating system. That's got fail written all over it.
And the reason given?
Google is shooting itself in the foot," said the person familiar with Motorola's plans, citing what he sees as concerns about Android fragmentation, product differentiation, and issues related to Google's support for its partners.
So you fix that by... making a competing platform that nobody's going to write apps for?
I'm not buying it. And neither will consumers, because there's no App for that.
The problem with "multiple monitor" studies is that they're always highly context-specific.
For many tasks, having a 2nd monitor is more of a distraction. For large monitors, a 2nd one is more hurt than good (let me tell you, my want for a 2nd one has dropped to zero since I got this 27" iMac, but when I sit down in front of a 17" screen, I desperately want a 2nd one).
Plants, on the other hand, are always a good idea. And a good chair is important for all jobs in which you sit the majority of the day.
I would disagree about the monitors. (posted from twin 26" screens - I would love to have a 3rd one).
At first, it was a bit overwhelming, but you'd be amazed at how quickly anything less becomes an exercise in frustration once you get used to something better.

"An systematic study conducted by NEC-Mitsubishi, ATI Technologies and the University of Utah has concluded that the use of multiple monitors in the workplace increases productivity. The study is discussed on Tom's Hardware, EE Times, and there's a detailed press release on NEC-Mitsubishi. For those of us who use multi-monitors, this is not shocking. But maybe now that it's official, IT managers will view it as a good investment and not just for gamers."
We could say the same about Windows. "Windows licensing terms prevent commercialization, because I have to PAY to use the stuff, and I don't want to abide by those licensing terms."
Same thing with Apple."Apple's licensing terms prevent commercialization, because I have to PAY to use the stuff and do a whole bunch more, and I don't want to abide by those licensing terms just to try to get an App published."
It's not the GPL preventing Apple from using the software, but Apple's particular business model. See the difference?

The first study revealed that the users' productivity increased by 9 percent. Further studies showed even greater increases - at times up to 50 percent for tasks such as cutting and pasting. AppleInsider takes commercial advertising, so yes, paid shill (or commercial FUD-packer) fills the bill nicely.
The GLv3 doesn't say that you can't use the software commercially. This article looks like just another shot in the whole "Open Source = BAD" war, from yet another FUD-packer (in this case, the member of the AppleInsider staff who wrote the original article).
Gender Identity has nothing to do with chromosomes. It has to do with the identity of self-awareness. I've been struggling with the concept of a binary gender system, but can definitely acknowledge that at 39, I don't know it all. But from what I do know, is if I'm a female, or male, it has nothing to do with equipment or genes, it's how I perceive myself as a person. Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity are exclusive, they're not connected, you can have any and all genders being asexual, homosexual, bisexual or heterosexual. It's not that being one limits the others.
While gender identity doesn't have to match your "equipment", and, at least for m2f transsexuals, appears to be influenced by a lack of testosterone in the uterus during the first trimester, to say that it has "nothing to do" with genes is an over-statement. The lack of testosterone in the first trimester, causing the BSTc region to not develop as "male", is because the fetus doesn't release the right quantities of testosterone at the right times, and/or because of selective insensitivity to the hormone, and/or interference by the uterine environment in the process.
Testosterone is secreted in increasing amounts during 3 independent periods in the life of the human male. These are during intrauterine life, neonatal period, and during puberty.
This testosterone secretion by the fetus, as well as the fetus' receptivity to the secreted testosterone, are both genetically determined.
So your gender identity can certainly be influenced by both your genes and other biological forces. To ignore the underlying biology and say flat out that it's not possible for someone to be "born that way" leaves the door open to the haters to mistakenly claim that "it's just a matter of lifestyle choice."
If the uni requires work be done that requires a computer, then they should either provide a computer for exclusive use (as some do)
Do you really believe any student is going to type out assignments on a manual typewriter? I can understand the concept of a "lab" back when they were banks of green-screen terminals (bad memories) but nowadays everyone has a laptop. Lots of schools make it a requirement.
This "lab" was ordinary desktops; leaving them on all the time is simply wasteful. As for the software question, students with their own laptops can always run software in a vm, or through a remote client. It's not rocket science any more. And if we're talking ordinary software like an office suite, unis get really good discounts, and there's always open source.
This "experiment" was poorly done, because there was no comparison between the same hardware powered by a regular power supply and the DC power supply.
Also, one good way to reduce laptop noise is to slightly elevate the laptop (or incline it) so that the air circulates better. That's good for 10 degrees on mine, which means the fan hardly ever comes on (the exception being when firefox goes into its "eternal I must scroll by one line" loop or some other firefox bug (it's always firefox). Or when another program starts up and insists on checking for updates, etc. Or the odd time I boot into Windows, which keeps the fan on all the time.
REAL power savings would be for the world to dump Windows.
