As we all know, we are supposed to have freedom in this country. It seems like we have to go to war against those who seemingly are not human. Like aliens are eating away at more and more of our freedom.
People who say he should be left in jail for his unconnected actions of participating in spamware are just plain missing the point. If you did something legal in your own country would you want to be arrested in another for doing something that is also not illegal in that country (or yours)?
I have not hardly heard anything about this in the general mainstream media. But every 10 minutes I see about the congressman scandal and the missing chick. Which is more important? A lady who is not considered kidnapped just missing... or freedom? This reminds me of the presidential campaigns and their coverage. Let's see... Nader holds the *biggest* polictal convention in the U.S. and you didn't hear a thing about it. That is odd...
These protests are so important. If no one does anything the DMCA will flourish and probably more strict laws will be passed. Do a search on "writing ABOUT kiddie porn" which is now illegal in Ohio??? I can't wait until the thought police come knocking on my door!!
Circumventing encryption?
To me it sounds like maybe the FBI is violating the DMCA kinda like how the MPAA was attacking 2600 for linking the DeCSS except of course 2600 was not decrypting anything using DeCSS. So I wonder if the DMCA only applies to people or organizations not part of the government or owned by big corporations?
I thought I was getting away from horrible service and crappy support when I went with an AT&T cable modem (which has worked flawlessy with d/l speeds exceeding a T1)... guess it's back to the analog 56k for me? If I were to get a DSL I would have to pick Qwest which is soon going to be MSN. Arrrghhh...
Why don't they just call it "Microsoft: All your bits are belong to us" OS or MAYBABTU OS. In fact, why don't we just put MS in our wills and as beneficiaries and just direct deposit our paychecks to MS. I wrote some songs, maybe I will give MS my copyright to them or maybe they already own them??

Free software and open source projects shouldn't be aimed at making money... it is a nice side benefit of making good software for everyone.
RedHat and every other GNU/Linux distro and probably every other company developing software of this type understands this; money is NOT the issue as M$ always claims it to be. boo-hoo we can't make huge profits from open-source/free software therefore it is evil and makes for a terrible business model.
Forgive me father for I have sinned...I installed windows 98
At least the article concludes that the GPL does NOT equal Open Source. Does it make sense that Gates/MS call Linux/OS/GPL cancerous and breaking to commercial companies than say it is healthy to the ecosystem? Cancer is healthy? Better send it in to Nature.com.
First off, I recommend anyone and EVERYONE should listen to Richard Stallmans speech he gave on Tuesday. It really opened my eyes and ideas about GPL and GNU and Linux. For one, i feel bad for calling GNU/Linux just Linux. Linux=the kernel, GNU/Linux=complete OS. GNU TOTALLY deserves credit for their work and adding 4 extra characters (GNU/) is not much to ask IMO.
The GPL obviously does not make a program you write required to be licensed under the GPL. Again, listen to Stallman because he does a good job talking about that. Open source does NOT equal free software!
All of the MS cronies obviously just want to mux GNU/Linux, GPL, Free Software, and Open Source together as one because that way people will be confused when some say they are not the same or don't even know the difference. Then people argue about this and that while MS is running off to the bank. GNU/Linux lets you write your own proprietary code based off of GPL'ed code. You just can't release it to the public that way. Did you understand that??? You can take GPL'ed code and modify it to your liking and not have to release it to the public!!! Its called FREEDOM!
Open Source does not necessarily mean free software GODDAMNIT! You can take open source code and modify it and release it w/o the source and thus is not free anymore. VERY common sense to me.
Has Ballmer ever written or worked with source code or programming? Does MS really innovate? MS has a good marketing team and can buy out competitors (innovatations) like there's no tomorrow!
The last 50 years of public- and private-sector collaboration has demonstrated that when intellectual property rights are protected, innovators are rewarded for their efforts.
Are innovators really rewarded? or is it just the corporation the innovator works for rewarded?
This comparison leads to the conclusion that the commercial software model alone has the capacity for sustaining real economic growth. Intellectual capital has always been, and will remain, the core asset of the software industry, and of almost every other industry
So does M$ feel threatened economically by by software released under the GPL? And who didn't know capital was the only thing M$ was concerned about???
Why did you upgrade to 7.1? Are there features/functions that you need in 7.1? Release 7.0 was kinda messy according to some, but maybe you can stick with what works for you. I remember when Nvidia released Detonator drivers 3 for GeForce video cards and claimed people got as much as 50% performance boosts. I (and others) got a decrease in performance and went back to an older version.
OK... lets get it right. RIAA thinks it can stop mp3 trading? NO WAY. It is just like any other case where technology has gotten in the way of these peoples mass income and they want to fight technology. As some have said, Napster is not the only option (IRC, the web, OpenNap, etc). This goes beyond just mp3s but it is a current example. The legal system CAN NOT keep up with the advance and change in technology. Hell, I can download 5 gigs of mp3s in the time it takes the courts to finish a case. Then people resist so it takes another "X" amount of time for anything to be done. Then some "filter" or change is made so we can't do the illegal acts we are all used to. Then someone comes out with a new idea(CatNap scrambler for Napster comes to mind) and gets around the Accoustic filter. Let us not forget RIAA is making money hand over fist since Napster came to be. Record sales in CDs... oh, but cassettes, vinyl and 8-track sales are down??
I don't think the legal system, RIAA, MPAA, Bill Gates, etc can stop us from fighting for our rights. Groups like the EFF, 2600, open source community, etc. need to survive. Down with the white rich control freaks.
