I can recall shirt machines from the early fifties. as you say, all steam. As I recall the operator had to place both the cardboard sheet for the back and the cardboard sheet for the collar in the machine as well. But when it worked, it was a wonder to behold. My sense of time is suspect, but I don't think that the whole process took more than 90 seconds. And the charge: $0.29 including pickup and delivery.
