I am sorry but this article was far too tempting to pass up. Now Anime may not be token "geek" news but theres a section here for it because theres obviously an intrist.
As for EVA itself there is a long story behind it that has to be undrstood first. Starting with it's creator. Hediaki Anno (spelling may vary) is not what your shrink might call exactly stable. And like many artists has his own ideas of what he wants to portray in any work. however what sells isn't always what's good or meening full or art. and that is how our series began in eva. a somewhat different take on "boy piolets his fathers mecha" show reminisent of gundam with a rather graphic story in it. The concept was down right heretical "god wants to end the world and humanity says no." whch at that levle is a rather tough consept for any show to tacle. the point was made early on in the series that the characters were frail. they were human just like the rest of us. and things progressed fairly well in the show. behind the sceenes anno had a mental breakdown for reasons unknown. proble because all of the publicity this new show was getting for what he thought was the wrong reasons. All of a sudden no one cares about all the other work they did in the past. along with a lot of other instibilities anno cracks at about the middle of the series. and instead of leaveing the project, decides he will make this for himself and the mecha takes a back seat to the characters own problems. (all of shingi's speeches work out a lot beter if you replace "piolet eva" with "create eva")
Human suffering is a tough topic to cover. there will always be callous people out there who are jaded to it. as for the degradation of the shows art. that has to do with budget. Neer the end of most one shot series the budget suffers eva was no exception and what were left with is a rather odd art-film esq collection of thoughts for the ending. The problem most people have is they haven't seen anything remotely like it in any show bfore hand and thuss have no basis to gague it off.
The movies came about forst as death and rebirth, explaining the baseics of the story and redoing sceens on a much needed budget. And END is harder to describe. Some call it an alternate ending some call it a continuation, but when you actualy watch the movie it says the same thing the tv series did.
Pain will always exist so we know where we are, The world is what you make of it.
and that message caries to, eva is what you make of it. form your own opinion.
