Unfortunately you could be killed for not believing or being apart of whatever church for 100s of years.... Look at the numbers today. While there is far less believers in the scientific community today it is not low enough.
There always seems to be the desperate attempt to show religion is compatible with science. While no one should deny that you can do great scientific work and a believer, we shall never know for sure how many actually did. Especially knowing that is where the patronage was and you could be burned at the stake for not going along.
Just at today's numbers. I mean hell the Egyptians did a lot of great work but no one is claiming it was because Ra or it was correct to believe that way.
