In my opinion, it's common knowledge that great injustices are performed against students by their teachers in patents and journal entries. Although this doesn't change the policy of patents becoming the property of the university, it does protect the student a bit more. Just because a university gives a vehicle to get ideas/inventions out, it doesn't mean that they can claim them as their own. I do believe that this corrects a widely practiced injustice.
It's been known for quite some time that government agencies are quite an easy target. The fact is, most agencies are not centrally controlled as to what software they need to run, much less what service packs/security patches that need to be installed.
I was on an independant team to go over several different agencies policies and security models concerning the Internet, and this is what we found.
1) Most of the time we could find a vulnerable host on a network to exploit from the Internet with an off the shelf exploit.
2) The hosts and their networks usually tend to not have much information worth a terrorists time. I'm not saying that this is an excuse, merely pointing out the fact that if they're running a default install of IIS4, most of the time there isn't much on the network worth the time invested.
3) Most networks with something worth looking for, have some levels of security in place.
All of that said, I can assure you that most skript kiddies (the ones that posted to attrition.net, etc) don't have the knowledge to gain access to anything more than a default install on a jpl or nasa.gov host.
Has anyone else noticed that Hemos and michael have been the only moderators to post things in almost 40 hours? They're either the only ones that actually work or have been shafted with the Sat/Sun shifts =P

I wonder if they'll try and send slashdot a nastygram now.
These types of antics only work on the ignorant and powerless. I sincerely doubt the EFF is going to roll over on this one. If EFF can take part in the DeCSS case, I'm *sure* that they can fend off some first year lawyer with a stick in his ass. Unfortunately from what I've seen lately, these types of lawyers make their living by these tactics. I think that there should be some type of check on the number of frivolous law suits entered into court by one person/firm. If it is determined that they are solely wasting the courts time with more than 40% of their cases then some type of restitution should be made.
Can someone put this up on a mirror, it seems as if they couldn't tile together a fast enough server/isp, then again they probably weren't expecting the slashdot effect.
Actually I've had the experience of writing a GPS to database application that takes a GPS signal and sends it to a server via cellular phone technology. So it wouldn't be that difficult to get the data from the car. Cell phone towers are almost everywhere and you don't need a very large antenna (5-10db) to maintain a constant connection.

It seems as if they're running their website from one of these boxes. Maybe they should get a faster machine =P
