If you want Biometrics, it isn't a problem, just roll your own login. A lot of W2K/NT is rubbish but the authentication is well documented, modular and replaceable.

Thank god, MS are only talking about machines, not physical users. Could you imagine that associated with your fingerprint is your license to run Office...

  2. Re:why tech support sucks on Tech Support: Sucking Even More · · Score: 1
I was working for a major financial derivatives exchange. All trading was electronic and originated through remotely connected members. Correct operation of the computers and software, both at the client side and at our side were very important. The exchange had some good knowledgeable people on the desk as well as some new-hire techies.

It was too expensive. The tech helpline was seen as a cost so the desk was deskilled and literally, secretaries took over (these days, the secretaries would be seen as too expensive). Calls would go to the secretaries who would collect the information and attempt to route the call. That was where the economy measure fell down. The call was often misrouted.

The call was away from the front-desk, so it was no longer 'counted'. Some members learned the names of the better second and third-level suüpport people and routed their calls directly.

The fact is the exchange made money on trading fees. If a member couldn't trade, then the exchange lost money.

  3. Is this really Win? on Space Station BSOD · · Score: 1
The Command Post computers provide command & control functionality. If this is running on anything other than a proper OS with RT capability, I would be very suprised. I know they use Win elsewhere, but for the CC?

What really sucks is that if this is true then someone forgot the lessons of that USN ship, dead in the water.

As a side note, I was amused to see from the crew logs that even NASA get the same Backup/MS Exchange problems that everybody else seems to get.

They were Sonys modded to be region-free and to work with the station's power. Modified by a British company called Technomatic. They have a story on their site (sorry, I can't chase the address at the moment)about this.

The mod was made outside the US to remain DMCA compliant. Of course the crew only watch DVDs in the Russian part of the station.......

DB2 costs some money to use commercially under Linux. However Informix was actually more expensive for medium sized jobs.
