  1. Re:Finally a Slashdot Article about this! on Graphing Libraries for Java? · · Score: 1

As someone who has had some limited experience with yFiles, I am really impressed with Giny. As you said, you need some more work on some of the algorithms and layouts, but it's looking really keen.
I'm planning on trying the CVS version soon, and see if there's anything fancy going on there.

    The hell?
If I see a link saying "look at this survey, and guess what comes out on top" I expect to see an actual review, doing more than naming several products, and then saying that one of them was obviously the best. I kept looking for a damn link saying "Click here for the full article" but found none.
The main link was quite interesting, but the vnunet???

/me wanders off to do something useful.

  4. Re:Take a look at these IETF documents... on SSH Claims Trademark Infringement by OpenSSH · · Score: 1

Taking an even closer look, specifically at Section 9:

    9. Trademark Issues

SSH is a registered trademark and Secure Shell is a trademark of SSH
Communications Security Corp. SSH Communications Security Corp permits
the use of these trademarks as the name of this standard and protocol,
and permits their use to describe that a product conforms to this
standard, provided that the following acknowledgement is included where
the trademarks are used: ``SSH is a registered trademark and Secure
Shell is a trademark of SSH Communications Security Corp
(www.ssh.com)''. These trademarks may not be used as part of a product
name or in otherwise confusing manner without prior written permission
    of SSH Communications Security Corp.

I'd say that that does indeed show that they have interest in protecting the SSH and Secure Shell names.

From the looks of this email, these people obviously have a claim to the name, and they have shown cause for concern in the usage of the SSH name.

So, by current IP law, they probably do have the right to demand this. But then again, my feelings towards Intellectual Property are not all that kind...

  5. Red Mars, Blue Mars, Green Mars on Riding The Space Elevator · · Score: 1

Anyone read the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson? How long you figure until it all comes crashing back down? It would no doubt be rather helpful, it would drastically reduce the pollution of space launches, but I don't want to be anywhere near the thing myself. The thought of a huge tower reaching up into the sky forever would give me the willies beyond belief. And I think the CN Tower is already tall enough.

  7. I love my noise on Computers And The Noise They Make · · Score: 1

Ok, I originally started with a single pentium box to run debian linux on. Then I got a second box, this one an older 486. I run FreeBSD on that. Neither of these have cases on, unless they're in transit. The next computer I have is a Digital AlphaStation, which has a monstrous fan blowing onto the processor, and also the power supply. This is currently running Digital Unix 4.0D, although i plan to upgrade to Tru64 5.0 when I get the cash. This isn't enough. I also picked up a 24 port switch at a computer sale recently for $5. The power supply in that also has a nice big fan. I'm now setting up another intel machine to run OpenBSD. If that isn't enough, I also have two air circulation fans in my room, one of which is extraordinarily loud. I rarely notice the sound from these fans, but when I do, it's a nice soothing sound. These machines are all in my room, about 7 feet from my head at night. I never seem to have any problems sleeping with all this noise. I *do* however, have problems sleeping without it. Because of this, I wake up immediately upon any power outage. :)

Despite the fact that in my courses I program in Java, I haven't kept all that close an eye on the standards process. I remember awhile back though there was some flap about sun withdrawing Java from the standards process. Have they changed their position, or is this just a media trick?

  10. Re:The Vision of Escaflowne on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

As someone who has named his computers folken, van, dryden and dornkirk, I must agree that the Vision of Escaflowne is a serious well worth watching. VoE is the first boxed set I've purchased (even though my friend across the hall has it as well).
It has a very good plot, as well as some good action scenes, as has already been mentioned. The soundtrack is also amazing. I'm actually rather annoyed at myself for not having picked up the soundtrack for it when I had the chance. The music is amazing!
There are some odd things though. Someone had to mention this to me, but the artists gave the characters rather pronounced noses. After it was pointed out to me, I couldn't help but notice for another couple episodes. Thankfully, I'm now aware, and once again don't mind.
Unfortunately, I still have yet to see it all in one sitting. Classes, assignments, and large groups of people wanting to watch something else always seem to get in the way. Not to mention the fact that I need to watch a couple more boxed sets of anime that I haven't yet seen...

Wow... another game announcement from Loki. This is quite amazing. I can definately recall the amount of time that I've spent playing Heroes II... quite awhile.

Has Loki started porting games of different genres yet? So far it seems like the only ones that they've done are of a strategic bent (Don't get me wrong, strategy games are quite nice), but it seems to me that they are missing out on some of the other genres... Actually, the only other genre besides strategy that I can remember playing is id Software's first person shooters.

Alas, lately I've been too busy coding to play many games though. Well, that and writing all these damn midterms. Oh the horrors of Classical Algebra! Damn you congruences!!!

  14. Arrogance on Microsoft Antitrust Case Arguments Finished · · Score: 1

Well, I haven't been keeping an eye on this case at all, but from the way the Washington Post put it, the legal depart of Microsoft was rather arrogant... I don't know how the US legal system works, but I would think that just about anything could influence the judge, and I for one would try and make a good impression... but then again, those of us north of the border usually don't have many experiences with the court systems in our own country, let alone another. Or at least I haven't. Does the attitude of either party have any influence on the decision rendered? No matter how impartial the judge, I don't suspect that he would appreciate having his court mocked...

If you wait things through, and try and work through a problem such as Corel's licensing, you will most definately accomplish more than by posting threats and venting anger. Often, that can irritate the entity that you are trying to win over to one's side.

Kudos to Bruce for clearing up the problems.

  16. Why does the US have to control everything? on Swiss Bank Goes Online · · Score: 3

What is it with the American Government and control? They seem to have their hands in just about every conflict out there, trying desperately to control the paths other nations take. Is it based on the belief that they actually know what's best for the world? Does the American government actually believe that it is morally superior to other countries, and that it's laws should be of paramount concern? Obviously the US government has no notion of privacy, but how far is it willing to go? The States seem to be more and more dictatorial when dealing with independent nations, and also when dealing with its own citizens. Are the works of authors such as Orwell required reading for highly placed government jobs?
