I know it's not very PC to say this on Slashdot, but I did have a good experience recently with Microsoft tech support when I lost my global catalog (among other roles) to a power outage AND my tape backup.
I'm rather new to Active Directory and the tech did help me step through ntdsutil, enabling me to seize all the lost roles.
