They do similar work here in New Mexico (#2 for lightning next to Fla.), with the rockets and the lightning. I think this was on some TV channel at least 3 years ago.... Not really deserving of mention here it seems, but then again, I don't choose the articles.
We've got some nice machines down at Los Alamos National Laboratory - no SPs, just big Origins. (new toys coming soon...) There's a nice paper on the Los Alamos Coupled Climate Model floating around somewhere describing how the software systems are built from coupled submodels of things like sea-ice and land. Just my $0.02.
The Department of Energy has done quite a work for electronic collaboration between the big national labs. Do a google search for "DOE2000" - you'll turn up quite a few.
