but the newer operating systems do warn about deleting stuff from the system directory and even the windows directory. Win 98 and 2k both make the user click show files before they are allowed to see the files. I don't know if win nt4 or win ME does this because I don't have any of those boxes.
The win2k message is
"This folder contains files that keep your system working properly. Ther is no need to modify its contents. to view the contents of this folder, click: Show files"
So on the 'new' os's from microsoft the user should know.
Also, I don't know very much about my car. I can change oil etc... but I know not to go removing things from under the hood unless I am told to by someone who knows what he is doing.
People just need to treat their computers like other things. If it ain't broke don't try and fix it. If you do want to learn by tampering with it, do so but when you call tech support tell them everything you did. Don't try and hide anything you did that was stupid because we will eventually find out or we will have you just reinstall everything. That is what upsets me the most in tech support. When you ask the user what they did and they skip the stupid little things they did like deleting random files. Then after an hour you finally learn that they little things they did and 'forgot' to tell you. It would save a lot of time if people wouldn't try and hide their mistakes. Who knows, the tech support agents may actually like taking multiple calls an the same issue again if users would cooperate with us.
Sorry for the ranting but I feel better now:)
