  1. Re:One More Reason to get DSL on AOL Ends Open Access Push · · Score: 1

Most of the cable companies prohibit servers in their AUP's. At least with DSL you have the option of paying a little more and running a server. I'm trapped with ISDN service as the only option, and it's WAY EXPENSIVE compared to DSL. If I could get DSL, I could triple my speed for the same price. Unfortunately, TELCO can't seem to get their shit together enough to get it working in my neighborhood!

  3. Re:Forgive Us for Our Wealth on The Timekeeper · · Score: 1

Even in the poorest countries, there are those who are wealthy, even fabulously so. I believe it is a class problem more so than a location problem. The "haves" use their wealth and power to dominate the "have-nots", and those people are exploited so the "haves" get more for themselves.

America is the kingdom of the "haves". We exploit the rest of the world so we can have more.

I certainly don't want to drive our living standard down to that of the poorest countries, but there has to be a limit somewhere on this society of consumption.

It's unfortunate that we allow a bunch of Madison Avenue hucksters to dominate our lives.

AMEN BROTHER! I just spent all day tracking down why one of my company e-mail systems suddenly stopped working...it's because our company Exchange server somehow got on one of the anti-spammer lists and ALL MAIL FROM OUR DOMAIN WAS SUMMARILY BLOCKED!

I'm all for reducing spam, but don't punish the legitimate users when someone else abuses the system. Go to the source.

You've hit on the other "tragedy" in technology, at least as it's applied here: It makes life better for those who have it, but in many cases worse for those who don't. Technology is elitist in many ways, and that is part of the tragedy.

  7. Digital Satellite Options on Ask Slashdot: The Dish · · Score: 1

I have experience with all three major "small dish" satellite providers. I chose DSS/DirecTV, but I believe Dish would also be a good choice.

The primestar system is OK, but the dish is a bit larger and requires two feed cables to operate. Both DSS and Dish Network use the same type of equipment, although there are a number of manufacturers of DSS equipment and only one for Dish Network.

Contrary to what I saw posted, there are a number of solutions to splitting between multiple receivers. The key is to buy a DUAL FEED dish up front. There are aftermarket splitters that will split a dual feed dish to any number of receivers. I've used 16 and 32 output splitters before and they work great. If you don't have a dual feed dish, the dual feed LNB's are available for $60-80US from a number of sources.

The commentary about the local stations is true, as there are archaic regulations that prevent the satellite companies from sending network feeds to most urban subscribers. I get a better picture from an antenna than I ever did on cable anyway, so it's not really an issue for me.

    Good luck!
