My company has a working curses based POS app. We are planning on releasing it under the GPL after finishing some of the back office functions (reports, management tools). If anyone's interested in it sooner, I could get it released imediately.
If you are VIOLENTLY opposed to curses it should be fairly easy to write a GUI front end--all of the user interface stuff is separate from the business logic/back end.
OH, it's all written in Perl and PostgreSQL's SQL.
