When 2-3 execs moved into the office I was supporting, they were a massive drain, killing my productivity- because any time even the slightest thing was wrong, we had to drop what we were doing, and rush to make the Big Baby happy.
The answer is obvious. Send their jobs to India. There it takes 20 to 30 cheaper executives to kill your productivity, and the company saves money!
Easy Package Manager (from the same people who brought you CUPS) solves all your UNIX needs. It can produce a package that is in the native format of each platform, in addition to having its own self extracting GUI installer.
InnoSetup on Windows is really good, although some people also swear by NSIS (NullSoft Installer (brought to you by the same people who did winamp.
> First 32 bits CPU: 386, 1985 > First somewhat 32 bits OS: Windows 95, 1995
Actually there was a Windows/386 (Windows 2.0 with 386 32-bit memory support in 1989). There was also a truly 32 bit operating system known as OS/2 V2.0 in 1992.
You also forget the numerous UNIX on Intel implementations, such as Interactive (now owned by Sun) and Xenix (SCO).
Most commercial software also includes many components licensed from other companies. The company doesn't have the right to open source that. It takes a considerable amount of effort to go through the code and disentangle the 3rd party bits. It may also be necessary to check all comments since there may be libellous comments that are okay within the confines of the company.
For an example of how bad this is, look at how long it took Netscape to release Navigator after they decided to open source it.
I do it all the time and not for the reasons you mention. The most important one is that Google does any spelling correction. It also puts the prefixes. (eg you type amazon.com and it comes up with www.amazon.com). It also gives you a list of things you can do with the address (backwards links, sites that contain the term etc). Although there are other ways of doing these, just typing in a portion of the url is quick and easy.
My Verizon Wireless phone only gets an analog signal in Orlando. Heck it also only gets analog in Peoria (next to the Verizon building) and in Canada. In analog mode most conversations are unintelligible, calls frequently fail to complete and the battery gives me a whopping talk time of 12 minutes. (It also gets so hot it almost burns.)
I wrote and use IMAP Spam Begone which runs SpamAssassin against all the emails in your Inbox. It doesn't have to run on the same machine as your IMAP server.

ThinSoft also have a product that does it for Windows.
