It seems to me that you are being naive when you say that "The presence of sentient life is easy to spot." More correctly...the presence of HUMAN life is easy to spot.
I always hear that there are 'necessary conditions' for life, such as water. But this is true only for the lifeforms here on Earth. It is totally impossible that life may have developed in a completely different fashion elsewhere in the universe? That it may be different enough from our own lives that we would NOT be able to recogize the signs, but yet it would still be there?
