The original article makes the parallel argument that theory keeps adding cruft to fit the current observations, just as adding epicycles on epicycles was required to account for the Earth-centered theory. So far, so good. However, cosmology has now fairly completely accounted for the observations at this point, and has no more tooth fairies to fall back on; that is, no more epicycles are waiting in the wings, nor are more required.
Gsdali quote thus: This is yet another article with the misconception that the VATech cluster is running OSX, it's not, its running a bare bones custom linux, I believe. It would be foolish to do otherwise....etc.
Wrong. OSX is being used, which makes this so much more Mac-a-liscious! Don't believe me? http://don.cc.vt.edu/tcfslides.pdf From one of the slides: 'The system will run the Mac OSX operating platform. (bullet) FreeBSD based system, with "typical" UNIX development environment"
My first encounter with Larry Niven's work was during high school, oh so many years ago, with this line (by memory, hopefully not too far off the mark): "Hey you, from We Made It, what am I?" (A Flatlander, obviously!) I was hooked.

Don't you mean, "Lasers"?
It's an invisible force field. You already have seen as much of it as you ever will!
What about a bossanova or chevynova?
-GammaRay Rob (who chases hypernovae for a living. Really!)
