Electronic Design A(something). Basically, it is computer programs to assist in drawing schematics, laying out Printed Circuit Boards, designing chips, etc.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of other reasons for sponsering a project other then a monopoly control on the Intelectual Property. For example, suppose a company has a requirement that has no Open Source version, only propritary closed source versions that cost $40. If a company has 1,000 employees that will need to use the program. If they put up $30,000, they can get the software they need and save 25%. Multiply that by several companies that have similar requirements, and it will soon add up to real money. Will this model work for all cases? No. Even the article gives a few examples where the closed source software model works better than the Open Source model. Even Linus admits that Open Source is not a magic bullet to cure all software problems. Remember, only a couple years ago, the Open Source model was being summarily dismissed as an impracticle, "idealistic" model. There is no way a couple of part time programmers can build better software in their free time than paid progremmers do for a company

Uhh.. Lucent's software supports nearly any OS. It's all in Java. Linux is not a special case While Lucent has a Java version of some of their software, their Radius supports Linux natively. They have two compiled versions, one for Redhat and one for Slackware.

This is one of the reasons I am using a Portmaster RAS instead of a Total Control. 3com's Radius software will only run on NT or Solarius. Lucent's will run on Linux. I made sure the rep was aware that it was one of the factors in my decision.

This is more effective in the long run than sending email asking them to port. With the email, they will assume that you will still use their software without it being ported. With a lost sale, there is no misunderstanding.

I also make it a point of asking salemen at retail stores if they sell Linux software, especially if I know that they don't. Then I get great satisfaction of saying "OK" and walking out of the store.

I should have included the quote. From the article: Within 30 days, IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., plans to increase its support of Linux by shipping a base model ThinkPad notebook for use with the operating system, said Phil Hester, chief technology officer for IBM's Personal Systems Group. "We plan to ship a base machine without any operating system on it so you could load any form of Linux you want," he said.

Most people missed the significance of IBM's announcement last month when they introduced a naked laptop. This was a direct assault on Microsoft's 100% monopoly market: the laptop. Do not expect Microsoft to go quietly into the night. They will fight back with everything they have to protect themselves.

What will they do next? Reread the Halloween Paper. It details some of Microsoft's options. Don't be surprised if they file a lawsuit against some Open Source developers.
