  1. Re:On reading and Potter on Harry Potter Wins Hugo · · Score: 1

I read the first two books (I refuse to buy the third and fourth in hardback), and they are a good read. Not the best ever (I have a difficult time comparing Ender's Game with Harry Potter), but a good read.

the third and fourth books (the fourth being the hugo award winner) are leaps and bounds better than the first two. They're much more mature and involved, and very enjoyable.

I can understand not wanting to buy the hardcovers though, they're pretty ridiculously priced.

there's a grey market collection of *ALL* the major studio ghibli films available on dvd. it comes from singapore and is probably marginally legal. it comes on 6 dvds, with 2 movies on each disc, and selectable english/chinese subtitles. I ordered a copy off of ebay, but haven't recieved it yet so I can't comment on quality. but it sells for a mindblowingly low price as well. oh yeah, region 0 - viewable on all dvd players.

also, there are region 2 (or 3 possibly?) collectors' sets for tonari no totoro and kiki's delivery service, which probably offer the best possible transfer, as well as a second disc on each with extras. they also have english subtitles. they're pretty expensive though, and available only through expensive japanese mailorder.

Yeah, they're going for the high-end users.
I mean, if you think about it, the only computers they need to sell monitors for are the g4s. The low end one, the cube, is probably getting pThe notebooks go without saying, and the imacs have monitors, built in. The only lower-end system they make that needs a monitor is the cube, and that's most likely being phased out too. So that leaves only the G4 towers, and I'd bet they're not selling all that many of their crts with them. After all, the only crt they were still selling was the 17" studio display. The upshot of this is that hopefully I'll be able to get the flatscreen studio display at a bargain price. those things are sweet!
