  1. Watergate would have been impossible on Australian Court OKs International Net-Defamation Suit · · Score: 1

Years ago I learned that, if the USA had've had Australia's strict defamation laws, then the Watergate scandal would never have broken.
The Australian laws are so strict that it's illegal to say something even if it's true!
Australia is literally a former prison colony, and much of the convict streak still persists - the underlying notion that everyone is a criminal.
The lack of constitutional gun rights means that Australia's government doesn't have to be as subtle as the USA's in oppressing the mass population.
Hell, it's even illegal to web-cast in Australia without a license! I'm so glad I left!

  2. This will backfire on Australia on Australian Court OKs International Net-Defamation Suit · · Score: 1

Australia has a heavy economic dependence on tourism. But this little earner could be in a bit of jeopardy.
People now have had reason to worry that, on visiting Australia, they might be arrested at the customs gate because of something they said on the internet years ago.
I must say that as an Australian, I'm glad to be out of that country and now living in New Zealand (which is not even a signatory nation to the Hague Treaty).

  4. First step towards software closed shop on Windows XP To Block Use Of "Troublesome" Drivers · · Score: 4, Insightful

Something tells me that this is the first step towards creating a 'closed shop', whereby NO software, not even application-level, can be installed or run unless it has M$'s approval.

Goodbye small independent software developers - if you can't afford the hassle and expense of MS$'s Certification Program, or if you don't toe the party line with MS$'s marketing agendas, then you'll find that your software is barred from Lose-dows XP.

Another possibility is that unknown software might be severely restricted in what XP allows it to do - for instance, non-certified programs may be strictly forbidden from all but the most basic access to the Internet.

And it's only a matter of a couple of years before you won't be able to buy a legal copy of Win2k, Win98 etc - it'll be WinXP or nothing.

Don't be surprised to see mandatory updates of XP which include blocked websites, blocked protocols etc.

I hope that the masses migrate to Linux, and that WinXP fails to recoup its development costs.

So, in order to avoid DMCA prosecutions, anyone wanting to perform calculations using more than 3 significant figures of Pi should first perform an exhaustive search of all copyrighted material - source code, MP3s, books, trademarks etc to ensure compliance with intellectual property laws. 3.14 can be generally regarded as a safe approximation.
