"SYSTEM CAPABILITY: The 3,000 processors can perform up to 6 teraflops, or 6 trillion calculations per second. Virtually every man, woman and child on earth would have to perform a calculation each second to keep pace..." hmm... with my PC maybe:)
Well I already built one 3-4 months ago as my home machine, for less than 3K. It's true only 300GB are relevant data so far; the rest is redundant data for performance experiments when dealing with ~1TB or so of data.
24x40GB Fujitsu HDD...1900$ (well, I considered that 960GB ought to be enough for everyone;)
4x933PIII...750$ (now you can get 1.4Ghz Tbirds for that I guess)
4xMainboard...120$ (those were slightly buggy -force Vcore to 2.3V if you implant more than 3 DIMMS- but dirt cheap)
4xATX 250W cases...64$
4x128MB...90$ (I added other 4x512MB recently but that doesn't count;)
5x100TX-Ethernet...30$
2954$ that is, anyone cheaper?
If you build it at current prices with Durons and WD 60GB drives you can get it closer to 2000$ than 3000$ (hmmm, what a waste of money in just 3 months;)
Let me quote the 'Science Editor':
