The neat thing about the P4 2.8 Xeons is that they are hyperthreaded, so one could (try to) argue that really the box is 4 cpu's at once. I think Intels own estimates is that the virtual CPU's are more like 30% effective. I'd rather have one box with 4 cpu's (or 2.6, depending on your math) than 4-5 boxes in the room. 1 500W power supply just sounds so much better than 4-5 400W supplies...
Now I'm not a network/beowulf geek, but wouldn't the network become the choke point for a distributed system? It seesm to me (I could be wrong) that a 100MB network translate to a 12.5M bytes/sec bus. So even if the single-box dual HT Xeons split the bus speed to 133Mhz each, thats gotta be faster than 4-5 slower machines communicating over the network. Or is it?
I have almost the exact same equipment as his new box, and it is sweet to play with. Its also VERY LOUD - my first purchase afterwards was a new 12cm case fan with a lower RPM so that the case wouldn't wake the neighbors.
What does one do with all that MHz? Warcraft, of course!
Someone DID do a remake of sorts- he could not get the rights to the name, so it's called Space H.O.R.S.E. It's been mentioned on/. a few times.
I know someone had a very good version of MULE working. I think they were calling it MULE386 or somehting like it. It was good enough that EA phoned up and said drop it or we bring in the lawyers. It worked; the project dissappeared. I've never played Space HORSE or any others. But at least once, EA took an interest in the clones..
Back in the day ('93-ish), when I was a young lad, I toiled night & day for no pay (but free games!) at the local Software Etc.
Every once in a while the regional EA rep would come buy and ask how their stuff is doing. I would always suggest that EA remake MULE. And every time she would reply "Thats the most requested game. But they won't do it."
I think MULE was great; but it was the game play that won me over. Its a tough one for any developer, I think. MULE was all about game play, not fancy graphics. I'm not sure how they could tweak the game play without ruining it. I read somewhere that the last remake was being done by Bunten, but EA forced her to add guns & combat, so she dropped it. Without lots of shooting & high speed action, it wouldn't appeal to most members of the short-attention-span generation. So they are damned if they do & damned if they don't. So they have shelved it and are moving on to simpler things, which WILL sell to someone. Thats the same reason why you see yearly updates to NHL Hockey, but no more versions of EA Sports Aussie Rules Football...
