  1. Re: Huh? on Shutting Down Worm-Infected Broadband Users · · Score: 1

The explanation from DSL.net was that the worm was saturating the bandwidth, not that I had been cut off. My internet access was spotty or non-existent from last Thursday at 6pm EST until around 2pm EST on Wednesday. DSL.net blamed this on a backup generator failure in NYC, then unspecified hardware failures, and then the Nimda worm.

I would just like to point out:
    a) I told Microsoft that Outlook would get hacked back in 1998 when they had the nerve to release that piece of crap Outlook 98 with the HTML viewer. They said "it won't happen" and "our customers wanted it."
    b) I use DSL.net (but not for much longer) and it took me about 20 phone calls before I actually reached someone who could tell me what the hell was going on.
    c) My network (unlike the rest of the state networks in Connecticut) did not get infected. Not because I was lucky, but rather because I had already taken the necessary precautions to prevent the worm.

No, they're not pretending, the average U.S. computer user really is that stupid. I can't comment on either the Mexican or Canadian north american computer users though. There are, fortunately, enough above average computer users to keep the average around "stupid". (I'm one of those above-average U.S. computer users, and I'm quite aware of how far the average IQ of the internet fell when the WWW began.)

    Turing was brilliant.

There is no reason to believe any of the following: a) the deck has 52 cards b) every card in the deck has an equal probability of being selected It doesn't matter what random number algorithm is used, these two possibilities greatly outweigh the random number generator's effects. It's entirely possible to make 4 of the 5 cards necessary for a royal flush come up say 50% of the time, and then make the 5th card come up something like 0% of the time.
