  1. First Amendment? on Say Here Why Sklyarov Should Go Free · · Score: 1

    Just one small question.

Why would a Non-American's First Amendment rights be violated? I thought the American Constitution was for Americans?

Not saying if this incarceration is right or wrong, but as I understand it, only American citizens are entitled to constitutional rights.

  2. Re:Info for Canadians on Renewed Crackdown On File Sharing · · Score: 1

Nice work. I am glad to see that Canadian ISP's aren't bending to the demands of American courts. American influence is big enough around the world. Don't make the rest of us follow your court decisions too.

I wonder how much of the CRIA budget comes from the RIAA, though?

  3. Scary, not just for Americans... on AT&T, AOL In Talks To Merge Cable Systems · · Score: 3

This is the first time one of these American mega-mergers has truly frightened me. I am currently a customer of Rogers Cable in Canada. ATT owns a large share of Rogers (whatever the current rules allow a foreign company to own.)

Just the thought of AOL owning any part of Rogers doesn't sit well with me. Now, when the contract with @home expires, we can look forward to Rogers@AOL.

And then, when the CRTC allows for another round of digital TV channels, we can look forward to AOLTV.

Come to think of it, Rogers also owns the Blue Jays, and Sportsnet too. Start selling tickets now for the 2005 AOLJays.

  4. CRTC? on Linux-based Convergence Boxes From Rogers Cable · · Score: 2

I am curious as to how the CRTC will enforce some sort of Canadian content rules onto this box.

Has this precedent been set yet? I know that CRTC rules certain channels to be mandatory. What about mandatory websites? Canadian music? Canadian movies?

  5. Only 1 thing is missing... on Linux-based Convergence Boxes From Rogers Cable · · Score: 1

Can this nifty device play my vinyl too?

I have always wanted to be able to telnet to my Planar 2!

  6. Blatant misuse of Napster in Toronto! on Canadian Recording Industry Claims Drop in Sales · · Score: 1

Hate to be the guy bashing the use of Napster, but...

While walking up Yonge Street (downtown Toronto) yesterday, I walked past a place that rents out computer/internet time. There was a big poster in the front window with the Napster logo on it. Below the poster was another large sign which said "MAKE YOUR OWN CD's. 5.99"

I'm not sure if this is happening all over. I am pretty sure this is not legal, or at least more illegal than doing the same at home.
