about 2 years ago i was talking to a japanese friend of mine, he was telling me that most japanese don't like Word and prefer using a japanese word processor (i can't remember the name of) as it was more "japanese" in look/feel and use rather than Word which was the same US program translated.
there is indeed more to localisation than translating the menus. different cultures think different ways (believe it or not).
my previous employer, a dotcom from the old skool days, was liquidated at the end of february. 100 people on the dole, within weeks most were in jobs again. indeed everyone has a new job now, even me!
ah but tonal languages like chinese are not serves by phonetic alphabets very well. there are thousands of homophores in chinese.
for example : yi can mean clothing, one, depend on, doctor, he, she, move, will... and quite a few more too
so what do you think will be easier to use? a phonetic yi or different unique characters for each meaning. i dunno about you but i find pinyin very hard to understand.

its not the same thing though, and in thousands of cases the characters are not the same
such as china, taiwan and japan? =P
And already globalisation is turning English into the de facto second language of the world.
