    That'll be any client app communicating with a database using an ODBC pipe for starters.

    I think are probably one or two of those out there.

    Since when is a shell (decent or otherwise) required to use pipes?

    Pipes are for communicating between various process *including* those launched from a GUI.

    Granted the Windows shell is cack - but then the GUI is so good who needs any more than a basic shell?

    The Amiga had eject buttons on it's drives plus the event to the system (as mentioned earlier re the Mac earlier) when a disk was inserted.

    I don't see how you can say it's probably more rare to see a box with eject button - even if the only machines to have them were x86's that still got to be way more boxes with mechanically ejectable floppies than all the Sun's, SGI's, Next ,Alphas and Macs put together.
