None, ran 8 bits cpus. As for the design itself, I am not so sure anymore.

GPS, LCD screen, motion sensor, java programmable. I'd rather wait for an android phone. For the same price, I'd also get a nice phone.

I's not slow because it's java based. AFAIK It's running a arm cpu emulator (apparently qemu) which then runs a VM.

If you want to know what slow means you should definitely download the latest series 60 emulator from nokia. I develop J2ME apps for a living and I found this emulator to be pretty fast compared to other smartphones emulators I have tried (Nokia, Blackberry, Windows Mobile ones).

The latest nokia symbian phones (nokia series 60 3rd edition) like the N95 and alike DO NOT let you install unsigned symbian applications. You have to get a signature.

The only applications you can install without signing are java applications which are by default very limited. Also when you install a non-signed java application the warning says that this app "may damage your phone" (it does in french at least), which is an outright lie (considering an unsigned java app cannot access anything from the system).

  5. Use this for payment/tickets on Image Recognition on Mobile Phones · · Score: 3, Interesting

My colleague once wrote a prototype doing the same thing (barcode recognition). This is also a nice solution for building tickets. THe main advantage is that you can give the guy at the entrance just one phone and he'll be able to scan entry tickets without the need for a computer or heavy equipment.

We even have a video showing this technology being used for payment. Note that in the video you see the recognition engine in java run on a PC with a webcam, but the same engine runs on many MIDP 2.0 phones (like a nokia 6230) and is also able to find a barcode instantly. In this case the phone is only used as a client for the payment concept.

  6. Why not a J2ME application? on PayPal Goes Mobile · · Score: 1

I don't like the idea of sending money with just a text message (SMS). We have built a fully working prototype using barcodes on mobile screens. The user has to enter a pin code in order to display his ID as a barcode that get scanned. In this case we're running a small shop. This is not a transaction from user to user but this can easily be adapted as long as there is a remote server using a data connection that handles the actual transaction. There are quite a few advantages to using an application: enhanced and uniform user interface, added security layers.

For anyone interested in our prototype (for a small shop):
