  1. Schools on Best Websites for Developers? · · Score: 1

Well where is theoretically the best place to learn something? At a University. As a student I know that lecture notes are the EASIEST possible way to teach yourself something. They'll do it better than books, IMO.

So just google for the programming language and the name of your favourite university and check out some of the notes, and save yourself thousands of $$$ in tuition while learning the same stuff as the coders of tomorrow.

Nice, another poster who doesn't bother to read the article. The things that you didn't mention in your post were:
    • the total cost to restore the computer vision system is $109,698
    • Mann requested bandages for the bleeding caused by ripping the electrodes from his body, but these were denied with the explanation that to open the first aid kit would require additional paperwork.
    • [he] could have easily concealed one of these weapons had such been his intent
So really, we don't care about if you have some sort of problem with him (it would be ironic if by "I met him", you meant, "I was in his class, and he gave me a bad grade!"), but please don't spout useless rhetoric without reading the reasons why he's upset. For God's sake they wouldn't even give him a bandage! And your gun analogy is pathetic - his computers are not considered "deadly weapons" by law, and he had documentation to prove it. There was just a couple of idiots with IQs that combined still don't match the intelligence of a small kitchen appliance trying to believe that they actually had a purpose for living (being the "defenders of the sky!"), and you have to admit that they went overboard. And that's where the problem lies. Even though I'm usually against civil suits, I hope this man gets millions. Go lawyers, go!

Also making the people who (like me) just read the headlines have to pay more. I don't usually even read the discussion postings. The guys who post a lot cause WAY more of a bandwidth drain then I do, since they obsessively cruise the forums.

Also I understand that some genius is going to make the comment "well, uhhhh, you're uhhhh, posting now! har har har you are a hypocrite!". I do tend to read what people have to say when it comes to the service itself.

How about a headlines-only service? That way it's not much of a drain on bandwidth, and you could charge like half for it or something.

  4. here's a sweet lame setting on What Sounds Better, MP3 or Ogg? · · Score: 2, Informative

Dast: Yeah man VBR is excellent.

    lame --r3mix -b112 source.wav out.mp3

That's a ready-made VBR setting that I (and many others) find remarkable. But lame has made an amazing number of possibilities for modifying how the mp3 is going to sound in subtle ways. Check out r3mix.net, and their forums.
