I think you're quite mistaken on the facts you said. Why should gcc-2.96 have to do with proprietarization of RedHat? Anyway, I heard that all the other distros also changed to this version of gcc, due to bugs in gcc-2.95. Anyway, 2.96 is what everybody is going to get used to, just because it's the pre-version of gcc-3.
