I think you need to check your spelling. The image in question is actually of the BSD Daemon. The "a" is important - it is a different word than "demon".

The definition the BSD folks were using when they started using "daemon" is the one I find listed second in my _Webster's_New_World_Dictionary_, that of, "Guardian spirit." That's the word derived from Greek.

Yes, the image looks like a parody of what many folks assosciate with "Demon," but everything I have seen of the Open Source community indicates it's exactly that - a parody. Poking fun. Teasing people who can't tell the difference between the two words. :-) Don't you think it'd make more sense to laugh with the joke and move on?

You speak of protecting children. I agree that society should help protect our children. But I don't think that this is a place where they need protection. First off, if a child can't tell the difference between the Berkeley Daemon and a "Demon", the child will have to have no mind. Even two yearolds know what is scary, and I expect a real "Demon" would be. That's like not being able to tell the difference between a puppy and a rabid dog.

Secondly, I'm aware of no verified incidents in the last century where someone was harmed by something which looked like a "Demon". However there have been countless cases where "Demons" wearing other clothes, like drug addiction, alcoholism, poverty, malnutritition, and physical, mental, and emotional abuse, have hurt children. If you're really worried about children, why not focus on the "Demons" they are likely to encounter?
