  1. Re:Password on CERT Finds Routers Increasingly Being Cracked · · Score: 1
I was working (security) for my former high school two years ago and their passwords for a
    Cisco Router
    7 or 8 Bay switches
    Intel print server
a bunch of HP Jet Direct cards

... and best of all the AS/400 that kept payroll/confedential student records all had defualt passwords.

I told them this was a bad idea, then I demonstrated what a bad idea it was by printing some pr0n out on my bosses printer. The same day I also admin'd into the AS/400 and brought up his payroll info. (I was young and stupid)

The net result two years later:
They took the defualt login off the AS/400. Everything else is still wide open.

Some people just shouldnt be allowed to run networks.

  2. University Students on Ask Kent M. Pitman About Lisp, Scheme And More · · Score: 1

It seems that more and more universities are focusing only on C++/Java, even to the point of discouraging learning other languages. Do you see this as continuing trend? If so, how do you think this will shape the next generation of computer scientists?

  3. Moores Law on Intel Promises A Cool Billion (Transistors) · · Score: 1, Troll

I hate to complain, here I go anyway. Moores law isn't a law. Its a fabrication. If I say that according to "Bills Law" the number of transistors in a CPU will grow linearly with the gross domestic product of Bulgaria you'd laugh at me. In truth, however, that's *almost* as valid as Moore's law.

Comparing Intels predictions (as wildly optimistic as they are) to Moore's law is therefore about as productive as trying to teach a duck to sing Ave Maria in Latin

Ok, I feel better know. I'm gonna go get a beer

  4. Re:Bit pricy! on Monitor One-Upmanship From IBM · · Score: 1

It is pricey, but it might make an impact in some places. I have a cousin who works for an ad company editing commercials. Some of the editing workstations they have cost in the neighborhood of 125k. So 16K for a monitor isn't really all that unreasonable. (of course he'd need two, but still)

  5. Higher rotational speed == Higher failure Rate ? on IBM DeskStar 75GXP Hard Drive Failures? · · Score: 1

I purchased a Maxtor 30GB ATA100 7200RPM hard drive about 6 months ago. It died after five months with the aforementioned clicking and grinding.

Is this perhaps indicative across the spectrum of high rotational speed drives? I don't have any hard info to back this up but it seems plausible. I'd be interested to hear from any other /. members who have had 7200RPM drives go bad.

I'm crossing my fingers that my new "refurb" drive holds out, especially since I finally have Win2K and Redhat 7.1 setup, configured and playing nicely.

How about it, is anyone else having their 7200RPM drives fail?

  6. Re:My first question on StarOffice 6.0 Beta Available · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually my corporation (Fortune 500) uses Lotus Notes for email/calendar etc.. I don't how many other large companies this is true for, but there is nothing blocking us from going to Star Office if we decide it is robust enough.
Our CIO has demanded a report on why we can't go to Star Office instead of Office XP. The asset management people showed him the figures for MS's new liscensing scam er.. scheme. Therefore he wants to go to something non-MS.
Are any other companies going this way?

  7. My Experience on Dorm Storm? · · Score: 1
Last year I worked as a Residential tech for my University during the fall rush. The greatest thing about it was *unlimited* overtime for two weeks. Since the desk were open from 8am to midnight you can imagine the great paychecks we got. (160 hrs in two weeks)

The biggest problem that we ran into is the "my dad set it up" problem. This is where a freshmen insists that the computer is set up prefectly beacuse "my dad is good with computers and stuff". As soon as you heard this you knew you were in trouble. I actually had one student who's father had plugged a telephone cord in to the ethernet card and the wedged the other end into the ethernet port *sideways*. Needless to say the port was junked and the student didn't have internet acess for the first two weeks of class.

To top it off the girls father called my boss and complained about the poor quality of our technical support.
