  1. Not here on Australian Linux user gets Windows Refund · · Score: 1

Just was intalling yet another Gateway today. I read /. just before, and payed REAL close attention. It was worded identical to the guy with the Toshiba in the story. So, in theory.... 8)

why MS says their products are "feature-rich."

Customer: "I was just working, and it wiped my whole hard drive."

    MS: "That's not a bug, sir, it's a feature!"

Customer: "I can't get anything done, though... maybe I'll try another OS."

MS: "But sir, our OS has a LOT more features, doubling every release! Wait until you see the features in our NEW version."

    Hehe.

  3. I coulda been a contenda on Dell Officially Supporting Linux? · · Score: 1

Hrm. I thought UNIX WAS the one to beat. When you put Linux in with UNIX, marketshare makes NT look small. Maybe it's just knee-jerk reaction, but I think Bill and Dell are up to something. Hopefully I'm completely wrong.

  4. Did they really kill the browser market? on Microsoft Overcharged Industry US$10B · · Score: 1

The issue I see (and have always seen) with having MS control the browser is this: If all the browsers are IE, and MS makes it hard to follow standards with a non-compliant browser, they can easily persuade developers to use MS dev tools. With that, they can use the leverage of the needed tools to gain server installs, by using proprietary server-side items.

So we have monopoly dominos... desktop to browser, browser to dev tools, dev tools to server.

It's just MS being MS. Great businesswise, but it really sucks for us people that actually like using computers, and care how computers help PEOPLE in the future.

That was a well written, positive, honest article. It will be a good year (and I'm not just talking about open source... :)

    Oh, Happy New Year, folks.

  6. I found it funny on Linus and his Merry Men (aka H4) · · Score: 1

Sheesh, what you might find funny is not what I find funny. I mean, does everyone like Monty Pyhton? Half the people I know can't stand it... the other half love it (happen to love it myself.)

You know, the only selfserving things I could find that ESR says are in major press publications (on line or on dead wood.) And we all know they NEVER take statements out of context, right? Hell, half the things I've seen that they've quoted from Linus make him sound like an egotistical jerk. I've just seen enough outside the press that I know this is exactly opposite of truth. I don't think it would matter who the press (or the community) chose to be "spokesman." Until we get more writers like Nick and Jon, we are going to have to deal with the press not understanding, and in turn misleading the public.

ESR has a dry sense of humor, it seems. Alot of hidden sarcasm (which I find funny, because I see it even in some misleading mainstream articles.) Maybe less of that, with monotone, humorless statements is what you'd like? Maybe that would create a better image... but personally, I like it. It forces intelligent reading, not just letting the words go in and stick. People should THINK, man. Of course, too few do these days (else FUD would not exist at all.)

This isn't a marketing machine, after all. And thank God for that.
