I seem to remember a worm a few days ago that DDOSed whitehouse.org... If only the target had been DNS based!!

  2. After visiting the whitehouse page... on Predict Worm Headlines, Win a T-shirt · · Score: 1

Having been a web developer myself, one wonders who designed the whitehouse page!

It looks somewhat similar in design to the hundreds of designs sent to me every month from 15 year olds looking for jobs! Surely such a large institution could have done better?

Im kinda half suprised it doesnt have a LinkExchange (or was it bExchange) banner up the top of the page!

  3. Re:Pentium 4 SUCKS! on Pentium 4 Under Linux · · Score: 1

The P4 architecture principles are actually quite intelligent.... The P4 will not produce good results when run on business-app benchmarking. It has been design to be more efficient at more complex computations such as 3D rendering. This can be done because the proccessors out today are so frickin fast that it doesnt really matter how good the CPU is at microsoft powerpoint. Where the power is needed is gaming, rendering, and other more intensive apps. For server apps you have the Itanium just over the horizon. Another point is that the Pentium Pro architecture (PPro, P2, P3) is at the limit of its scalability. Intel would not be able to hit multi-ghz production speeds on the PPro architecture, whereas the P4 can scale alot higher.

  4. Re:Why are the Buddy lists not local??? on MS, CNET On 7-Day Messenger Outage · · Score: 2

I am assistant manager at a large (~100 seats) internet cafe in Australia. It's in this situation where I see Messenger as a far superior product. Users from all over the world come in, log in to messenger, and instantly have thier contact list (when microsoft hasnt sent the data into the ether that is) up in the application. These travelers use the microsoft hotmail/messenger combination religiously. Meanwhile, with ICQ, which has a local user list, each different computer they use needs to have the user list re-instated. You might argue the you could carry round you icq user list on a floppy, but it is alot of muckin round to add another user on icq, add in your user list, and then make sure it is all removed when you leave. Even though messenger has remotely stored user lists, looking at the data accounting records, an instance of ICQ uses alot more bandwidth than msn. Laugh you might, be here the cheapest data rate we can get is ~$190/gb, and line rental is expensive so we get by on a 256kbps ISDN, & extremely aggressive proxy server. Thus every byte of non-cacheable data is important. That said, personally i prefer ICQ, albeit that i use an older version (i hate the clutter & ads of the newer versions). Dave ICQ#: 908664 :P
