  1. Re:Hypocrisy on Animation and SFX with Linux · · Score: 1

gimp is a really great app. Rhythm & Hues has done some really abfab development on it. We (digital domain) can batch gimp "renders" on our renderfarm. Can't say that about p'shop, thats for sure. A lot of real vfx work needs lots of specialized apps (often in-house). You need to put a lot of money into it whether you're buying, or developing. You're dreaming of all-in-one apps, when by definition things get specialized. It'd be great if there was oss renderfarms available. Or a compositing package, or what have you. They don't exist, and anything that will come into being in the oss world, will probably not be up to par for anyone doing feature work. What we are celebrating is the fact that such apps can be easily developed, and deployed on linux. -n --

  2. Re:C++ compiler people are on this on Animation and SFX with Linux · · Score: 1

There should be no concern regarding "the legacy of being on SGI and growing up with excellent C++ support." Coming from the vfx development side, we have code written in C++ and we want it all to work with all the funky C++ business, and we want a really good optimizing compiler. From the linux fan side, we can't make headway in the technical sides just on "coolness" merits. We need to have system software like accelerated graphics, and compilers to work really well. People don't like to make parallel changes. They'll only do it, if it improves their lives in general. -n

I guess it's naive to say we want a simple tiff flipper. There are bunches of file formats that need support, including in house ones. You might also be interested in doing stuff like straight from disk playback. Probably something every single vfx house has. -Nafees "Guy who works on the flipbook at Digital Domain" Bin Zafar
