  1. cyrix 433 for $70 instead.... on Intel to Cut Pentium III Prices · · Score: 1
see this site for details. (Link from JC's news)

Next question is: when will Jedi/Gobi/M3/whatever be coming out, so that Cyrix will be competitive in terms of performance as well?

  2. Re:Predatory pricing is bad for Intel. on Intel to Cut Pentium III Prices · · Score: 1

Remember: predatory pricing hurts Intel a lot more than it hurts AMD. AMD only has the capacity to make ~1M Athlons per quarter. Intel
makes a lot more processors. If it's 10x more, then Intel loses 10x as much money (assuming all other factors are equal). I think the stock market would be much more willing to keep afloat an AMD losing $150M per quarter than an intel losing $1.5B per quarter.

It gets even better. If Intel starts selling processors at a loss, AMD can just switch its fabs over to producing mainly flash memory or something. It has to keep selling a few Athlons to maintain mindshare, but if the supply is low, it can keep the price up. If it all lines up right, it can be making money at Athlons while Intel is losing money on processors. I'm sure AMD would be happy to maintain that situation!

Of course, things never work out this perfectly, but remember that it is a two way street, and predatory pricing can easily do much more harm to Intel than to AMD.

  3. manual typewriters on Not All Wrist Pain is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome · · Score: 1

I love manual typewriters. There's nothing
more satisfying than really nailing those keys. Especially satisfying is the return bar. I would nail that thing so hard the typewriter would walk across the desk.

Of course, the piano training helped there -- I once broke the second bflat below middle c key on my school's piano trying to play loud enough to be heard above the jazz band....

  4. and sometimes its just your funny bone on Linux Hardware Databases Merge · · Score: 1

A few years ago it happened to me -- the
fourth and fifth fingers of my right hand went
completely numb. Having had friends with CTS,
I went to the doctor immediately. Turned out I
had pinched my funny bone nerve some how (probably
by sleeping in a strange position).

Problem went away in about a week. It still
happens every once in a while, but never as
    severely.

Scared me enough that I behave a little bit better now. Programming is not near as intensive
for keyboard use as University was, so I'm not
so worried anymore. (I used to type for spare
    cash).

They already can monitor any cell phone conversation and triangulate position in less than five minutes anyway.

You mean it is possible to do this, but of course it is not legal to do this. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen and it doesn't mean you should blindly accept it!

It's possible. Therefore people do it. It doesn't matter whether you accept it or not. The only thing that can be affected is how much it is used, and how much those using it are prosecuted.

    most people are unbelievably boring.

How do you know? Have you been listening? I think maybe you have.

Most people are unbelievably boring. Most people have done illegal & blackmailable things. (not all of the illegal things are boring, but most are). First step is to make victimless crimes legal. Second step is to either totally ban surveillance or else to make it totally open. The latter may be our only choice.

It is simply not practical... for the government to monitor over 270,000 people.

Really? Sounds simple to me. Do you know this is not possible? Most of the system is almost there now. If it was all automated then why not. How do you think all those people get their bill and should we accept it?

Don't give them a reason to watch you, and they won't.

That is really funny! I guess your one of those people who think that if you are truly innocent you wont be convicted. Have fun with your rude awakening.

They'll be watching you regardless of who has their way. Don't you think it'll be better if you can watch them as well? Universal surveillance will also make alibis a lot easier.

Why don't you go to the EFFs web page a look around at what has been happening for the last few decades. www.eff.org

The EFF works for two things: freedom and privacy. They are both very important. However, the privacy battles have to be in the right arena. Strong, routine encryption is important. Privacy in one's own home is important. Universal awareness of privacy holes like cell phones is important.

Eliminating very useful security features because of vague privacy concerns is harmful. If I press 911 on my phone, I want them to find me. If I don't want them to find me, I can turn off the phone (or remove the battery if I am really paranoid).

  6. Lot more expensive here in Canada on Palm VII vs BlackBerry · · Score: 2
$20/month unlimited for Blackberry in States?

It's a lot more expensive here in Canada. Cantel has it at CAD$50/month for 500K + 0.10/K over that. Ugh. Usually Canada has cheaper communications rates than you guys in the states.

You can definitely write user apps for blackberry. If I could get American prices, I'd probably hook up my wearable to a blackberry and I could get rid of my analog cell phone & modem.

Or maybe not. Hopefully PCS data prices will come down soon when Clearnet & Fido get their data networks running, so Bell has some competition. The cool thing about PCS is that you have two communications methods: PCS data & SMS. SMS is great for email as its always on. PCS data gets you a lot higher bit rate for surfing. (14.4Kbps woohoo!)

You don't have to use Blackberry: You can get PCMCIA modems for the same network (Mobitex), Dunno about Linux drivers.

It sounds like 3Com is putting in their own network. New York only. Ugh.

Come on everybody, buy stuff like this! Until a major display breakthrough, there aren't going to be enough of us 'borgs out here to drive the price down, so we depend on you!
