  1. Re:Idle Time Reporting Option Removed on Gaim 2.0.0beta1 Released · · Score: 1

This is one thing I really dislike about this release. I always used that feature simply so that people didn't know if I was there. If you're trying to avoid someone or are too busy you can simply answer the message later when you've got time instead of having them know you're in front of the computer.

I think I might revert back to 1.5...

  2. Re:Witness on Hundreds Spot Fireballs In Colorado, Nearby States · · Score: 1

I'm fairly sure I've seen one of these fireballs here in central Arkansas. I may have seen two, but the second one I didn't get a good enough glimpse of. The first one I saw farily well one night when I was sitting out on campus. It's nothing like something that'd last for 20 seconds. The one I saw lasted maybe 1 and a half seconds. It was about 3x as long as it was wide and it was probably 10-20x as wide as a regular shooting star. The weird thing about it is that it looked like some dust or something like that. It wasn't a big chunk, more like what a snowball looks like when crushed. I figured I saw the clouds or something, but then I realized that it was completely clear. That was intersting.

  3. Re:Former Litton Marine Systems Employee speaks. on Computers That Thrive in Salty, Humid Environments? · · Score: 3, Informative

I don't know about just any type of computer. You'd think that things are fairly resistant to salt water and what not, but then once you're out over the salt water for a while it gets ugly. I've worked on a drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico and things just don't stay intact for very long. Up on the rig floor it didn't take very much time at all to ruin a good set of tools just from the salt water eating them up. Keep in mind that the floor of the platform is roughly 75-100 feet off of the water and this guy will be on the water. You'd need a bit more than just a good case that keeps water out and doesn't rust to give the computer a life of more than 1 month.

I own one of the Logitech keyboard and mice combos and love it. I don't even use a chair for my computing... I lay on the ground on a little mat with the monitor on a little stand. It's nice to not get tangled up in wires and all. And I mean it's been 3 or 4 months since I changed batteries and I'm typing this with it so they do last a long time : ).

  5. Re:wow on Shawn Fanning's Account Of Napster · · Score: 2

As far as recording in a nice studio goes, I've done some recording before for a band that I did sound for and it does not take hundreds of thousands of dollars to have an awesome studio. You can have more than enough studio for under $10,000. The recordings I made were made with equipment that totaled under $3000 (not counting the band's instruments), and honestly the sound quality is cleaner than some of the mainstream bands' cd's that are out today. The only thing that record labels do is distribute. If an alternative distribution method came up, then record labels wouldn't even be needed. Just people that were willing to work in a small private studio, and bands could hire people (not companies) to do that easily.

  6. Different grades of disks on How Long Does A CD-R Last? · · Score: 1

I'm not an expert in the area of recordable cd's, but I know that there are different grades of cd-r/cd-rw's. There are the cheap-o blue or green disks that aren't expected to last long and aren't rated, then there are the silver and gold disks. I think the silver disks are sopposed to last up to 100 years and am unsure of the predicted liftime of gold disks. I thought that silver disks would have a silver writing surface, but I've seen them with blue writing surface.. I guess it's just a rating type system. Now, about cd-rw's there is the aluminum which is crap and is only good for about 10 writes (I think), then there is silver, gold, and platinum. Platinum is sopposed to be good for a few thousand writes.

I'm not entirely sure about some of the information but from what I've come across that's what I've learned.

  7. Re:Space Shuttle? on Massive Sun Flare This Weekend · · Score: 1

I actually remember watching a Discovery program that talked about this. It said that basically if something big like this happens while astronauts are in space they are toast. The space shuttle is no where near thick enough to protect them from these. It also mentioned that it would even be a concern if there was a moon base because the moon does not have much of an atmosphere to shield it from this. The moon would have to have secial shelters to shield its inhabitants from these.

They're trying to say what we can and cannot see? Thats just like saying we cannot learn chemistry because we might be able to make a bomb. Just seeing a film clip about a riot or something doesn't mean that we will do that. If they keep on doing this it would surprise me if an underground internet would emerge. But then again with how little privacy we have right now that would probarbly get found out and tapped very quickly.

Why do they try to shield us from the real world?

I am a general car enthusiast. Classics are very nice, but I am also into the newer models. Offroad trucks is one of the things that I am into, but performance at the same time a lot. Oh yea, if anyone would have a tip on a manual transmission (that can handle quite a bit of power) to put into a 1991 GMC Sierra without a great deal of modification I would appreciate it. I can appreciate the classic cars a great deal though. I enjoy working on them and restoring them.

  13. Maybe they should... on How can we Keep Our Teachers Updated? · · Score: 4

...spend more money on actually doing the educational things instead of just going for the other things that are non academic. Here is an example; my school put in a new basket ball court last year and it costed something of 500k. Now couldn't they have spent that kind of money to update their sciences and math departments. Also to maybe get a nicer computer education system. That is one of the major things that I have against my school, they do not teach any courses about computers except on how to use M$ Excel and Word. The only thing close to programming is a web mastering class where they teach you how to use an M$ Frontpage to create web pages. Couldn't they just teach the html code itself? It is rediculously simple.

Well, back to the outdating of the sciences in schools. Even if they did have money they would probarbly spend more of it on things like sports equipment or for a really big grant add another building, but still teach the old and outdated material. Another example, my school is adding a 15 million (I think) dollar building right now. I see no problem with the old one, the roof used to leak but they fixed that before I got there.

It's not the money, its they way they spend it.

  15. School rules on Students Punished for Personal Websites · · Score: 1

The schools are getting really out of hand. I don't see all of the extra rules or anything helping in the least bit. In my school (I am a jr. in highschool) they passed a bunch of new rules this year like uniforms, id tags that we must wear, and the rules in general have become almost silly. How do they think that us wearing id tags or uniforms will keep violence out of schools. I mean if someone wants to bring a gun it would be no problem considering how small guns are made. These extra rules are only making things worse in my opinion. Last year I did not mind school too much, but now I hate every single day. I cannot stand not wearing my own clothes and having to wear khaki's and id tags. What are we? Inmates?

Ok, now about the website thing. Some schools/school officials will do anything to enforce a power they do not have. They want as much power as they can get and try to take power from you to get theirs. I would defenitely sue my school if they tried to do some crap like that do me. I sincerely hope that the guy that is suing the school gets them really good.

I don't know a whole lot about hardware but I bought a 27.2 gig Maxtor a while back that runs great! It is pretty quick for an EIDE. It is still only a 5400 rpm drive, but for $240 I figured you could not beat the price. I have two disks and both of them are Maxtors. The other one that I have is a 11.9 gig. They are both nice drives but the 27.2 is substantially faster because of the ATA/66 interface.

Because they are animals! Humans mean and are worth much more than any animal ever could be.

  25. Louisiana crap.... on I Am Not a Student, I Am a Number · · Score: 1

All of this stuff is kinda dumb if you ask me. I go to a school in Louisiana and we have to wear those little id tags around our necks at all times. I am uncomfortable about having my social security number out in the open and all.

Just because I wouldnt have it around my neck doesnt meand that people couldnt get to it anyway. The school systmes are so insecure over here it is not funny. Anyone can get anyone else's social security number. I am thinking of raising hell at the school about this. For an example of the insecurity stuff.... I can go around and get anyone's social security number that I want. For the absentee paper, it has every absent student's sodial security number on it and they do get around school quite a bit. The studnets hand these absentee papers out and I have taken a few on more than one occasion. Also, almost every paper that concerns anything about student(s) has the social security numbers on them. Oh and maybe the worst yet, for the keyboarding department and other systems where a student would have to log into the system the teachers call out the students username and password to give it to them (social security number is password), and this happens in a class of 40 or so.

Not long after the Littleton, Colorado schooting the discussion of school uniforms were brought up and almost everyone was against them except for the people high up on the school board. I sent an email to the superintendent and he said they would survey parents and students and go from there. They did, but I have heard from many people connected with the schools in some way that they discarded the surveys and published false results. Now we are stuck wearind khaki pants and green pull over shirts. I didnt mind my school that much last year, but now with all of the new restrictions I despise it. The id tags were also part of the same thing.

Email me if you would like to see what the id tags are (with my social security number removed of course).
