  1. Re:Predicting 0% marketshare for EVD on China to Promote Own Alternative to DVDs, EVD · · Score: 1

China is communist only in name, and even in name they are moving away from that. Their economy is socialist and becoming more capitalist everyday. They have one of the fastest growing economies in the world at the moment and over 1 billion consumers domestically. While they are a dictatorship with a nasty habit of censoring people, until 1989 their army was highly respected by the chinese people because they were seen as champions of the people. After tiananmen it's changed a bit, and I haven't seen surveys, but it is still probably fairly high. Additionally, the Chinese people have elections at the local level, and the president of China recently said that they were considering elections at the level of governor. (although technically everyone is elected..there is usually only one person to choose from though) This is in comparison to Saudi Arabia which only recently has started implementing local elections. This isn't to say that the Chinese government is soft and cuddly. It's not. It's a dictatorship, and it doesn't like people who threaten it. Hopefully, though, it will transition to democracy. Either way, I think that EVDs will have enough merit to stand on their own, or perhaps with some investment from the government to get them off the ground, but enough people have said why.

I think that the argument can be made that Windows is the center of the desktop market though. If Linux can't interact with Windows then it is not satisfying the requirements of the desktop user, and for many users this is a major requirement. That being said, Linux does fulfil most of the requirements for most desktop users. Still, there is no need to bury ones head in the sand. As the article said, OS X had few problems with Windows network interaction. From my own experiences with Samba, I would agree that it could be easier.

ah, shut up, that's why "To capture physically; seize" is equivelent to "An imitation or reproduction of an original; a duplicate." While I consider pirating music to be morally wrong, I don't think it is stealing, by the definition you provided. Of course the reasons I think pirating is wrong is because artists deserve to get money for making good music.

The people of Oklahoma are as responsible as the government since they elected them. If you have an issue with the way your government is run, why don't you get involved in some way instead of whining about how the government sucks? He is the Oklahoma legislature. If you have issue with the people of Oklahoma, you can move somewhere else. This is the beauty of a free and democratic country.

I don't know about your clients, but my clients certainly want me to care about what browsers they use. If I write a page that looks like shit in Netscape 4, or has broken Javascript in whatever browser that is installed by their IT department, then they will bitch at me. I can try to explain W3C compliance till the cows come home, if it is broken, it is broken.

Correlation often implies a relationship between the two things though. The example of the number of teenage smokers and CPU speeds doesn't do this idea justice. If it was found to be the case that in years in which teenage smoking decreased, that CPU speeds increased at an amount proportional, then that would be correlation. I mean if you could make a function to approximate CPU speed increase amounts/percentages, then that would be correlation. Simply saying that X happens and Y also happens in one instant of time, is not correlation. Correlation is about trends, if I am not going completely off the deep end.

The point I was trying to make is that 'ease of use' should not be the all-defining criteria for doing everything in life.

It's not, but it is an impotant factor for the workplace. Most people would rather get work done than learn how to use their computer. To use your car metaphor, their is a big difference between working on your car, and using you car to go get groceries or something.
