Digital identity is a "double", as mentioned like a momento design pattern. It encapuslates some state that you wish to keep and represent to another entity, because...http really has no state. The way that I see this shaking down is that the root is the list for all the ldap servers out there, plus some rather large "identity service providers" whom somebody trusts. You either run your own server, or find someone to do it for you that you trust.
