  1. Re:Keeping costs down and still beating Microsoft. on Playstation 3 In the Works · · Score: 1

The problem is that Sony (or any game hardware manfacturer) doesn't make any money on the hardware to begin with. All of the systems are sold as a loss leader at some point, in order to get a piece of the market. Once entrenched, they enjoy the huge markup that is made off of software. And every console manufacturer has some "seal of approval" licensing program that ensures that they get a piece of all software sales, even if a third party developer writes it.

Why would they want to give this up?

I don't disagree with you, I enjoy tinering with my platforms, and am devling into the guts of my Dreamcast as we speak. But you're going to have a hard time convincing any game console manufacturer to buck the trend, and as they see it, hurt their precious software business.

It's funny that this should come up just now. I'm getting married in June, and have just been through the wedding ring ordeal. I ended up with the titanium band with 18K gold screws around the circumference. It looks positively barbaric from a distance and extremely sharp up close, and the gold screws are for real, they actually work!

Plus, it's a fitting analog to my current situation: i.e. getting screwed all the way around...

I'm in agreement that the demonic duo are doing all they can to slow things down, but I highly doubt any real technical juggernaut is at work behind the scenes. It would be more likely that they are hedging their bets and waiting for the one-two punch of the DMCA and SSSCA to make things easier for them. I mean, why go through all the trouble of solving the "hard" problems of secured distribution and usage when you can force the hand of all the major technology players to do the work for you, with just a little money donated here and there to the right congressman.

Why look back at "dirty old analog". Would not Quantum computing perform a similar end run? I'm sure it would be snapped up by would be pirates in a moment; they could rip a DVD in a nanosecond versus 10x the total running length of the film.

Beacuse this product actually has the ability to share built in. It automatically creates a password protected web page that someone can directly stream a recorded show from.

There's no weeding through the P2P jungle or having someone (god forbid) try to email you a show.
