Under what grounds would you say that they are just out to get $$$
Linux/Unix certifications (to my knowledge) are well respected within the community.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, I only know that MCSE (NT4) can be taken by 14 year olds w/o a network at home...
I'm not too sure about any Linux Certifications but, I imagine that its different.
Win2000 MCSE is actually pretty hard, I know people who passed the exams before but, misserably failed 2000....
Just a thought.

What sort of sysadmin are you looking for NT or Unix/Linux? Or someone familiar with both. Ask if they have any certifications (MCSE, Redhat, etc...) and how current they are. Ask questions that you would be able to answer and throw in a fgew that you couldn't (just for kicks). Another thing to ask is of any programming experience in Perl, Shell scripting... and throw in 2-3 questions on that.
Add a book on:
MySQL
HTML
(PHP/Python/Perl) - the three P's
C/C++
and the official GIMP! - I found it in my local library.:)
another tip, read reviews of books - if most people say it sucks... their RIGHT.
a good instance is Java for Dummies... the WORST BOOK ever written. Don't get a FOR DUMMIES BOOK, in reference to computers... it really is only for idiots.
