Yes, the secret is out -- Vernor is a UNIX user. In fact, I had a chance to talk geek-speak with him at Worldcon last year (my wife ran the SFFWA hospitality suite, so we got all kinds of wonderful visitors in the evenings). While we were munching pizza he told me that he used a customized version of EMACS to write all his novels. Name another author today who can make that claim!:-)
We also decorated the suite with some large plush spiders and a "web" of wire and little tiny lights to celebrate his Hugo-nominated novel. He was amused.
Poul was like that. He responded to snail mail, and hung out at conventions to talk to fans. I had a nice conversation with him at Windycon in 1995, about cats and book cover art.
Tau Zero is near the top of my "top ten" list of influential and fascinating SF books. The SF world is a poorer place without Poul's presence and skill.
