  1. Redhat Momentum Worrying. on Dell Buys Equity in Red Hat · · Score: 1

umm? hello? did I attack Redhat in any way in my post? no. Did I imply they are going to release non-GPL software? No. Did I say they weren't usable? No. Yes, I like Debian, but for a long time I was a Redhat user (heck, my homepage still says I'm a redhat user!). Read the note before you post. Geez.

  2. Redhat Momentum Worrying. on Dell Buys Equity in Red Hat · · Score: 1

I won't worry until they start releasing non-GPL software. Until then, I can put anything they release on my Debian box. As for all the closed-code vendors who are releasing product X only for RedHat, what do I care? The core system tools are what is important to most of us, and those remain under GPL, which means we get to keep them one way or the other.

  3. But I can't buy one with Linux (yet) on Dell Buys Equity in Red Hat · · Score: 1

Look at their server lines to find machines with Red Hat- as far as I can tell, that is all Dell is offering at the moment. And with vastly reduced options- no two processor boards yet. I won't by one from them until I can price out an NT box and a RedHat box side by side and have it proved to me that I am not paying an MS tax. This is unfortunate- Dell's support is unmatched, and they build their boxes with top-notch components. I won't buy VAResearch until they improve their warranty support, and I'm dubious about some of their specs. I guess that leaves me with my old P166 for a while :-)

Well, I first registered well over a year ago, and despite the fact that they say up front that they can spam you, they never have. At any rate, I forgot my password- which is when someone pointed out that cypherpunk/cypherpunk works there. Now all my machines use that combo. Enjoy it...

  6. Corporations v. Individuals on Commercial Open-Source Software · · Score: 1

I think many of the ideas brought up here are interesting, at the least. But I'm surprised that the author (in describing a system where users would be charged for OSS) never makes the distinction between corporate users and private/educational users. The "rights" ascribed by RMS to users seem (to me) to hold true only for individuals, not corporate monoliths. Similarly, the problems ascribed to many corporate-sponsored Open Source projects (like Mozilla) seem to stem from an unwilligness of individual contributors to give time and effort to faceless individuals. (i.e., we'd all gladly give code to Linus- but how many of us would give code to Linus Inc.?)

I guess what I'm getting at is that individuals and institutions who aren't using software to turn a profit shouldn't have to create profit for others. However, if I am General Motors and am raking in literally tens of billions in income for myself and my share-holders, there is no reason why some of that wealth should not be distributed back to the coders or the community in some way.
My two cents- maybe another two or three later-

  8. Tales from the Network 'hood on Accidental Hacking? · · Score: 1

When I was still a windows user and used to surf the school's LAN for mp3s, I frequently found people whose entire hard drives were on the network with read/write access. At least twice, I left word docs on their desktops titled "PLEASE READ" with dire warnings about the results of their stupidity, and even instructions on how to change the situation. Result: they deleted the files and left the passwords unset. Yet more reason for dumb people to give their brand new PII's to me...

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else planning on buying a new system anytime in the next couple of days can let us know about their progress through the same process. I might be more tempted to buy a machine from a manufacturer that allows this than one that doesn't- can everyone here let us know how it goes?
