OK, I knew everyone would bring up Kent State. Yeah, it was horrible. No, I'm serious. Waco was ridiculous. I hate the US Gov. And don't even get me started on Ruby Ridge. But that's all beside the point. The point is, as far as industrialized, recognized, non-third-world nations go, China takes the cake for being a dank pit void of human rights. Can anyone honestly say that if they felt oppressed in the US, that they'd immigrate to China. Anyone? Hello? Uh-huh.
And come on, Kent State was a tragedy, But I think we as a nations learned from that enough to prevent a similiar incident. Tienamen(sp?) was really really bad. Not only were many killed, but they were never vindicated in any way. No monument. No social change. Just a freakin parking lot. I believe the term is: Insult to injury.
Oh come on, that's bs. Yeah, yer right about the US, the government is a bit shady, and to be honest, I don't really know who's in charge here. Maybe I'm better off not knowing[ha]. But please... No offence to you or any of your friends(whatever their nationality). But modern China is a sheisty place to be. For god's sake, They broke up a peaceful student demonstration by rolling in tanks, and arresting anyone that would stand still long enough and killing those that wouldn't. And after it's over, what do they do? They make it a fuckin parking lot. And on the 10th anniversary, what do they do? They roll out the tanks again...Yeah, just to remind everyone what happens. There are still people in prison for that demonstration.... no trial [or maybe a mock trial].
Yeah, the US is a fat, lumbering beast of a beaurocracy. Yeah, people are shafted everyday by the Gov. But not like in China. No sir, I don't think I'll ever go back there. Not until there are some changes.
I find this amusing. Whenever the unspoken concenus is that a user is too stupid to ever learn anything about using a computer, all the Mac zealots jump in. Otherwise, you hardly hear from them. But that's not my point. Like I said, I merely find that amusing. My point is that, as many have already said, just because he's old, doesn't mean he's an idiot. Hell, maybe after a year of using Linux, he'll want CVS access or something. Ya never know.
It's been established that he's already paid to have Win98(proly) installed on the machine, but that's usually a given when you buy from an OEM. And we all know that Linux, and it's accompaning UI's, are free. So why the hell not grab your favorite distro and get a dual boot going to start off. Grandpa will use whatever he wants. Just make sure he can operate both of them enough to fulfill his needs. Obviously, some crazy l33t Linux config is out of the question, but it can certainly meet his needs if configured correctly and will be more stable and reliable... Assuming that there aren't hardware related issues.
And the people of America are fairly aware, especially when a poor job is being done.
And who is informing them? The media? Do you think that's a "good thing"? If you merely consume mainstream news, then you are clueless about many issues. For example, how many wars, i mean "police actions" or whatever, has the US been engaged in the past 10 years? OK, now how many of those can truly be called a success? ZERO. Phillipenes(sp?), Somalia, Iraq, Kosovo, to name a few. We got involved in these regions in the name of human rights and what did we accomplish really? The Phillipenes is as corrupt as ever. Chaos still reigns in Somalia. Hussein and Milosovich(sp?) are still in power; how long till we hear from them again? And what happens after we pull out? So does the press. If the atrocities in Somalia and Kosovo are so bad, if it was so bad that we had to get involved, then why aren't we still hearing about it? Did we fix it? No, we didn't. So tell me how informed the majority of the public is.
Most people are satisfied with their representation, however, and there is little upheaval.
I would say that is because they aren't fully aware of their rights and that the government walks over our rights on a daily basis. It's become the status-quo. And it is sad.
OK, yeah you're right. But it's beside the point. What happened in germany was going to happen regardless of the specifics of their (at that time)existing government. The country as a whole was falling apart. The economic climate was such that any form of government would have been suffocated into failure. There were way too many contributing factors to begin pointing fingers at specifics.
I don't have a lot of experience in web design. I have a small homepage but I think that it looks clean and neat and is rather attractive looking. When I first started, I learned the old 'notepad.exe method'. Once I got decent with that, I tried MSFP. It didn't make any sense to me. It was totally not intuitive like a GUI should be... IMO, text editing really is easier!... --messiahXI

I think that sounds like a really good idea, but I'm unsure of it implications, legally or whatever. Anyone care to educate me?
